I sat on a bench, under a pavilion to write; on a brisk blustery day. Due to the intermittent winds I ended up getting more people watching done than writing. It was a bright sunshiny day. With few clouds in The Big Blue, it was an optimistic afternoon that inspired thoughts of the endless possibilities of things to come; a day that refused to let one cling to the defeats and regrets of the past. Toward the end oc my time here a man came to sit on the adjacent bench, to read. Bruce was this man's name. A man of humble and unassuming demeanor he sits beside me, and eventually strikes up a conversation, about what else but, that time honored, and cliche, but not trite tried and true chit chat ice breaker. The weather. And we chated off and on; as one read, and the other failed to get much writing done. You'll be glad to learn, the other, did get his back pack reorganised(no mean feat, that). When some time had passed bruce took his leave. Though not before offering me the remainder of his half gallon of chocolate milk. Which I was surprisingly struck, near to overcome, with an odd admixture of emotions that I probably fumbled any form of gracious acceptance and welcome. I DID manage to convince him to take a token of my esteem, and of friend ship, good will and gratitude. That token being a chocolate Tootsie Roll Pop. And THAT small yet honestly cordial and and altogether unexpected interaction, and that of the woman who ate her lunch at Bruce's bench before his arrival with her greetings and salutations were a welcome start to an idyllic afternoon. Read moreThe best park of the city of Grand Prairie, the city of parks. It is one of the best in the state of Texas. This park has nocturnal animals and enough bushes for them to hide. City does a good job with bright lightning to keep them away from public access areas. The west Trinity river fork runs thru the park. The canals in lake are full of gold fish and turtles. Part of the lake is wetland and the elevated bridge over lake extends the trail to 2 mile each way. If you are in a hurry to take a walk, this trail can take you in and out of nature very quick. Thanks to the people of the city who fought for this park and forced the state to build elevated highway without interfering with the natural setting...
Read moreKids Fishing Day @ Mike Lewis Park was a sweet little event hosted by GP Parks & Rec. While there was no guarantee of a catch - there were at least hopes. And parks/event staff awarded blue ribbons to all the participants.
A few kiddos caught 1-2lb catfish (it’s catch and release) and everyone documented with “cheeeeeeese” and cheers before the fishy friends went back in.
The play structures nearby the water’s edge are appropriate for young children & there is a modified play/exercise area a bit closer to the woods.
This park has plenty of space to spread out if you plan to picnic or toss/kick a ball around...
