Get ready for a truly relaxing experience on the white sugar sand beaches of Fort Desoto. This large park has something for everyone. Enjoy a paddle board or Kayak trip through the mangroves; where your likely to spot Manatees in the warmer months. Stick your feet in the sand on one of the many spacious beaches, where your never to feel crowded. Rent a bike and enjoy the over 6 miles of continuous paved bike path that takes you from one end of the park to the other. Explore the old Fort or take a ferry over to Egmont Key for a more private Fort exploration. Bring your boat and put in at the large boat ramp. If you kyte surf, bring your gear and head to the Eastern most beach over looking the Sunshine Skyway bridge where the winds are best. Stay for a few days at the water front campgrounds so you don't miss anything the park has to...

Amazing fun place to visit. Historic and quaint all at once. Endless areas to explore and check out. Only gripe it the cost of everyday stuff at the camp stores. Captain Crunch Cereal bowl, .99 at Walmart this place has them marked $3.99. And so on..... I guess that's just the cost of a vacation. The beaches are nice. Staff is nice. Bathrooms in the camping area are walk up only, no pit stop on your way out, no parking. Also the shower and latrine stalls are crazy small for the size of the building. Many, many broken tiles and missing grout as well. Didn't see any "rats" but some huge raccoon and fuzzy squirrels. Honest 7 out of 10. I'll be back at a cooler time, June now. BTW, we loved how close the waterfront camp sites are from the seawall, we literally fished 10...

Fort DeSoto is an absolute gem for anyone looking to escape into nature and history! My visit to this sprawling park was nothing short of spectacular, offering everything from beautiful beaches to fascinating historical sites. The well-preserved fortifications provided a unique glimpse into the past, while the surrounding natural beauty was a breath of fresh air. Whether it was walking along the pristine beaches, exploring the trails, or simply soaking in the panoramic views, every moment at Fort DeSoto was memorable. The park’s tranquility and diverse attractions make it a must-visit for families, history buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. I left feeling refreshed and already planning my next visit. Fort Desoto is a mixed bag. My wife and I were finishing up a trip in the Tampa area, and I wanted to find somewhere cool to go, so on our last evening we decided to check out Historic Fort Desoto. The first draw back was you had to pay to park in the area, I think it was like $5 dollars which isn't crazy, but I like to keep my wallet in my pocket. The history was kind of cool but nothing crazy. What we were really looking forward to was the sunset. And it was a beauty! So many colors! The sad part is that the park closes at sunset, and they were quick to chase us away, before we could enjoy the dark purples and blues of the sunset. It made me feel like I could have picked a better place to watch the sun go down.
