Haddam Island State Parks a typical island within the CT River. It catches a lot of debris during the spring floods. Although camping is permitted by permit only. The island is usually closed in spring so humans do not disturb the nesting eagles. Once the baby eagles depart the DEP opens the park for general use. It is a very popular spot for boaters and can be very crowed during the boating season. Boaters generally anchor on the western side of the island which become very shallow the further south along the shore line of the island. Boaters also must use caution when entering the North side due to river sediment that has built up on both the Northern tip and southern tip of the island. There is a small channel through the northern sandbar that allows Boaters access to the west side of the island. However the channel has been known to move from year to year so Boaters would be wise to exercise caution when attempting to get to the western side of the island. The eastern side is very close to the dredged channel of the river and inexperienced swimmers should avoid that side...
