My family and I have gone pear picking here for the last 2-3 years and I couldn't believe the bad reviews this place has gotten. We mainly go there as a family outing and the farm has the added bonus of allowing pets. So my husband and I would go with my family and bring our two dogs with us. Yes, it's obviously more expensive to pick your own fruit than just to buy it in the grocery store. But for us, it's the fun of being with family and being outdoors doing stuff. Grocery shopping isn't nearly so fun and most grocers won't tolerate dogs in their establishment.
The times that we were there, signage were in both Korean and not-so-great English. But it was understandable for the most part and I never had trouble finding an English-speaking worker at the place. You can beat the crowd by going before noon on a Sunday. There is free BBQ chicken and my parents are very Asian and take advantage of their senior status to get it. There's an indoor and outdoor picnic area and you're totally allowed to bring your own food or buy eat theirs. It's just a really chill environment, and I'm a fan of that.
Of course, they do try to keep people picking in one designated area. They are a working farm, after all, and they can't just have people running helter skelter picking from whatever tree they like. That's been the same at every pick-you-own farm I've ever been to. So I really don't understand some reviewers' complaint that they felt herded. The times I've been there, we were allowed to pick from two rows of pear trees and the rows are very long. I would guess there were over 100 trees for about 30 people to pick from. At no time did I feel like I need to go to a off-limits row to satisfy my pear-picking needs. The farm is also extremely large...much larger than some of the pick-you-own farms I've been to. So of course they're not going to want customers wandering off, damaging their crops, getting lost, getting hurt, and suing them.
The only downside of the farm (and it's no fault of theirs) is how far away it is. I would probably like to try grape picking there as well, but it's a good 35 minutes drive so I'm not going to go there just for a little...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOur group arrived around 11am. Even though it was mid October, the weather was in the 40s and windy. There was a small line for the women's bathroom and it was ok at that time. We headed to the buy our tickets for Asian pear picking but there was only one line for people buying produce and tickets. We got on line and waited for the transport to the designated area for pear picking. Got on and some of use ended up standing for the ride. This was my first time ever but it was entertaining seeing people who were definitely prepared with small knives to peel and eat straight off the trees. After you've picked your Asian pears, you need to join the line to pay for them by weight. We waited for the transport back, which was a VERY short distance we could have walk, but I understand the farm probably would have liability issues if something were to happen to someone in that short distance.
We had brought lunch, so we sat in the lunch area and ate. Someone of the people in the group struck up a conversation with the owner and he share some cooked corn on the cob with the group.
Second trip to the bathroom in the afternoon before the trip back to flushing... HOLY HELL! Used toilet paper piled higher than the toilet tank. Lunch almost came back up. Besides the bathroom situation in the afternoon, I had a good time and would do it...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is one of the few that offer Korean pears picking. It was my first to pick Korean pears, and first time to this farm. When arrived, I was assuming there should cafeteria offering different snacks and quick bites. But there was only steam corn and the lady only speaks Korean. Some Korean visitors were nice to help translate, otherwise would be a bit difficult to purchase the corns. The boxed pears and other farm good are not that cheap compares to what I have purchased in Flushing. Certain Flushing stores has daily delivery, so i sort of thinking what's the point of getting those pears directly from farm since only $1 to $2 cheaper and have to drive 1.5 hours. The corn does taste sweet, but so does other farms that I been to. For the fun of picking pears, I would probably go again. If for the benefit of getting fresher and/or cheaper pears, I probably would...
