A wonderful educational visit! They are open on Saturdays noon to 4 Saturdays and Sundays noon to 4 you have to get in through the military guard and tell him where you're going and identify yourself..l air conditioned it was nice and cool in there..we heard a wonderful lecture from Dan Heaton a lieutenant in the air Force.. he has written three books about Selfridge air Force Base, the military. Dan Heaton gave a wonderful speech with a lot of good humor.! Then we also heard from an 80 year old Colonel I think who was in the Tuskegee military! he flew airplanes in the segregated black air Force. He told us wonderful stories about what they did for our country. It was a terrific luncheon I liked every minute of it, all the airplanes, old airplanes... we could walk around, see all different shapes and sizes. Selfridge air Force Base used to be called Selfridge air national guard. It is famous for creating many generals who moved up in the ranks of our nation through the last 80 90 years of the airplane invention in the air Force industry. The Selfridge museum will have a tea again next year, it will be advertised in the Macomb daily. I would recommend everyone go...
Read moreThis past weekend, My son and I visited the museum, this has been a long time coming, and we were not disappointed. When we walked in, we were quickly greeted by Jim and Sam who gave a quick overview of the museum. Sam became our tourguide explaining about the history of the base and the museum as we traveled through the different eras and exhibits. After we finished the inside, we headed out to the SPAD hanagr, the Air Park, and we were given a tour of the restoration hangar where the Sherman tank lives and they are actively restoring a Corsair. This museum is definitely worth the price of admission for the artifacts, aircraft, and the wealth of knowledge provided by the volunteers.
If you are interested in visiting, check out their website for more inforation such as days and hours of availbility. The guards at the base just checked my registration and insurance to make sure they were current, ran a quick background check on my driver's license, and then gave me a pass. Children did not need anything to get on base,...
Read moreWow! What an amazing experience we had. I surprised my husband by taking him to Selfridge Military Air Museum located on the active Selfridge Military Base after we were not able to visit the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC on a recent trip because it had not yet reopened. We both come from military families though neither of us have served, and my husband is an avid history buff and passionate about all things military from uniforms, to combat weapons, to aircraft in all branches and all eras of U.S. combat.
I can't believe that being lifelong Detroiters we had never visited Selfridge but we will definitely be back! The exhibits inside the museum and all all the historic planes on the field outside, some of which visitors can access, as well as the knowledgeable Personnel makes this trip a must. Everyone was very welcoming and their commitment to being inclusive in telling that history is so necessary and refreshing. This place, second oldest base in the country,...
