The most underrated snorkelers’ haven in Kihei, Maui. The hoards go to Makena for its sandy beach pleasantries. While just beyond is this behemoth marine reserve. A precious refuge teeming with live coral, fish of plentiful variety and ocean flora. There is plenty of parking in a public lot half the cost of Makena and free for locals. The catch, you might be the only one there and there are specific, limited entries and exits into the water because of the reef. The farthest south, Kinau is the best IMNSHO. Who doesn’t want to submerge oneself, stepping into an underwater kingdom on a bed of ancient lava? It’s golden! Probably not for kids because of the dangers of the coastline, if you get too close to the break line of the current you could smash into jagged lava. Make haste and try it out. And if you don’t want the word to get out, write a terrible review, and disregard this...
Read moreGreat little snorkeling spot where you have a chance to see some great reef and wildlife just off the shore. It is a rocky beach and a rocky walk to get to it, so wear your sturdiest water shoes until you're ready to put on your fins (put these on before you are fully in the water). It gets deep pretty quick which is great. Be sure to chat with the park ranger, who is likely in the parking lot area, first as they will have a better idea of the conditions for the day and can also give you a good idea for your route in the water. Visibility was pretty great in early May, but it changes constantly so you won't know until you're there. This was a great little gem of a snorkel spot. There is a paid parking lot for use, and we had no trouble with availability. Park/Beach is free to...
Read moreGreat, secluded snorkeling destination. Parking in the Ahihi-Kinau Marine Preserve Parking Lot costs $5, pay at machine. From the parking lot, make the short 0.25 mi walk on a clearly marked path to a black rock/sand beach. READ THE SIGNS to tell you where to enter the water. The beach looks intimidating, but the sand under the water is very fine/soft and you'll find huge schools of fish swimming in 0-2 feet of water right off shore. Expansive reef on both sides of black sand beach, including unique reef fish we did not see elsewhere on the island. You'll likely have the reef to yourself as very few people travel here. This is a must-do, really...
