Molokini — Attraction in Hawaii

Came here on a snorkeling tour and it was amazing. My first time snorkeling above a reef. There were many colorful fish species from Finding Nemo. The water was calm so I was able to recover from being sea sick on the boat ride. I saw black and white great frigates (birds) nesting on the island itself. It is a protected bird sanctuary so you're not allowed to climb or touch the sharp rocks. Same for the reef and fishes. And you need to stay at least 10ft away from sea turtles. Boats have special anchors in the cliff underwater that they attach to like a parking lot so they don't hurt the reef. There were many black triggerfish that came close to me so that was cool. There were several Achilles Tang fish hanging close to the boat that you could see from aboard. Once the boat left I saw several flying fish jumping from the water wings spread bouncing 3 times before going underwater again....

The island itself is beautiful and the waters are very clear. I didn't see any sea turtles even though the advertising made me think I would. I did see some fish, but that was only after I vomited.

Would I come back? Most likely not. My first and last time I was here, in July 2019, I nearly died from drowning. I came here to snorkel with a small group of tourists, about 15-20 of us, but I was a complete beginner and the waters were very rough. Even my bf, who snorkeled before, found it quite hard to stay afloat and breathe properly. The advertising made it seem like the waters would be calm enough for beginners to learn to snorkel on their own. Far from it!

If you're new to snorkeling, stay away from Molokini. You'll have a much better time snorkeling in the beaches...

In late May we Took an afternoon tour with Four Winds II Tour and the company was incredible but When we got to the crater there weren't many fish to see only 2 or 3 different kinds. We saw other tour boats on different areas maybe there were more fish there, or maybe we went during a bad season. The water however was really blue and clear. Very disappointing as the photos we saw online looked way different. BUT a different day we went to explore another amaizing spot on our own and found dozens of different fish and even got to swim with a huge turtle which was Awesome. I'd say if you like to explore do some research & use the day to go somewhere else to snorkel and...
