Its a safe place to play in the ocean on this side of the island even when its a high wind day. We have seen sea turtles here several times. There is opportunity to view fish and coral while doing light snorkling as well. In the "winter" months the water gets a lil gross from different currents, so visit in the warmer months. Always watch out for broken glass and fishing lures. Even though there are trash cans everywhere we spend a decent amount of time picking up after others to give back to our community. There are picnic tables, swings, bathrooms, and most of the time a lifeguard. We visit a few times a month and its busy randomly during the week and weekends. No police around so dont leave items in your vehicle.

This is a great beach for kids, even in high tide, and you can make a whole day of it. The beach is sandy on the bottom so water shoes are not required. The whole area is fairly protected with a large rock wall, and the depth is about 3.5 feet at the highest generally. There are lifeguards on duty, picnic tables, a large grassy area, and open ocean access for the more adventurous. For small kids, there is a super shallow area with a ramp where they can wade and play in the sand. The beach park ask has a swingset (4 swings) and a bathroom facility. There are two parking areas and there are stairs and a ramp for accessibility.

Life guards need to pay more attention to the kids in the water than paying attention to their cellphone. Small kids are being attacked by larger kids trying to take away the float rings or arm floats from the smaller children who are 5 years old to 3 year old. These bigger kids are from age 9 to 15 years old and bullying the small children and pushing them under the water. The life guards should not allow such bullying of small children. If the larger and older kids are pushing the small children out of their body floats and pushing them under water then they should ban these older kids and parents from the beach for 2 weeks to prevent any small child from drowning. When a group of larger kids are around small children on floats should be a warning sign something is wrong especially when they see two or more larger kids playing tug of war with the air float that has the small...

Convenient location because it is in Hilo with a good amount of parking. It's also protected by a large rock break wall which makes it a very calm bay area without strong currents. There is a sand floor too which is really nice since most beaches in Hilo are very rocky. Due to the protected wall and sand this makes it an ideal beach for little kids as there isn't much to worry about. There are showers, bathrooms, shade, and a swing set too for kids. The downside to this area is also due to the wall. Since there isn't much water movement the water isn't as clean as a lot of other areas. The houses in the area are also mainly cesspool type houses so not sure on how clean it is in a microbial sense too. I wouldn't go here after heavy rains due to that fact and always make sure to wash off well after...
