I am so disappointed. I wanted to come to this bird viewing preserve today. When we put it in the map we saw that it closed at 2:00 and we were going to get there at 1:35. Okay, 25 minutes. Not ideal, but okay. We got there at 1:36 and the lady was standing outside not letting us in. I told her I know we only have 20 minutes. She said, no, they stop letting people in at 1:30 and they close at 2:00. So sad. But we saw a roadrunner in the parking lot (Lifer for me). So, okay, we will see what we can see from the parking lot until 2:00 (they close a gate). We saw 3 birds, 2 of them new to me (very exciting !) and then the lady came out to close up at 1:52. I told her we had 8 minutes left. I also told her if she had let me in I could have made it to the first pond and probably have seen 10 birds before 2:00 (very much unlike me to be confrontational). I was going to spend my 8 minutes in the parking lot that I had left but my husband made me leave because she was closing the gate. I understand closing at a certain time (but seriously 2:00 PM??), but if I know I only have 20 minutes and there are already people inside, then why couldn’t I have my 20 minutes? I guess because the 2 ladies that were working wanted to leave early, as they proved by walking out 8 minutes early and telling us they were locking the gate. But there do seem to be birds here. It was my last day in Vegas so I...
Read moreWhat an absolute gem of a sanctuary! The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve has become my go-to escape when I’m craving a peaceful connection with nature. Before discovering this oasis, I felt a real void—but now, wandering its serene trails surrounded by lush trees and vibrant wildlife, I’m reminded of how magical the natural world can be.
The preserve is teeming with life! From the chorus of birdsong at dawn to the occasional sighting of a curious rabbit or even a coyote trotting in the distance, every visit feels like an adventure. I love arriving shortly after opening—the air is cool and crisp, the light is golden, and the birds are at their most active.
A huge shoutout to the kind, welcoming staff at the front office! They’re always ready to help with tips or hand you a handy paper map (which I highly recommend grabbing). The informational posts scattered throughout the property also add depth to the experience, offering fascinating insights about the local ecosystem.
Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just someone looking to unplug and recharge, this preserve is a must-visit. Five stars without hesitation—a true haven for nature...
Read moreWe visited this place right before her flight because of its proximity to the airport. The wildlife is there but under no circumstances would I recommend anyone come here. The area and community is unsafe and toxic. We were only there for an hour and in that timeframe we had our luggage stolen from the trunk of our vehicle (Note: this area is fairly remote so there were maybe 10 people there at all times, even less during the time we went).
When we found out our luggage (precious, sentimental items were in there as well as valuables) was stolen we immediately brought it up to the staff and local law enforcement. Both groups were extremely unresponsive, not helpful, and deflective. Even after stressing the importance of what was stolen and showing local law enforcement what Google tracking indicated directionally what happened (our computer was inside our luggage), we were brushed off.
Again. Please please please only visit this place with nothing of value on you in person, and expect no help from locals. In general I would avoid this place as the risks are...
