This place was really cool. We stumbled on it while on a bike ride and I'm glad we did. The kids enjoyed the walk around and seeing the old fort walls. I really enjoyed the history and just learning about the place. I had never heard of it before but am super glad we found it. We did however get locked in. We were the only ones there and the sign said it closed at sun down. When we went to leave the gate was shut. Luckily were I work has a similar gate and I was able to manually operate the gate controls from the inside and we were able to get out and make sure the gate shut before we left. We left well before sunset to be clear... just be careful. I'm pretty sure our 5 bright yellow bikes in the parking lot would have been very visible if anyone had looked in the parking lot before shutting us in.

To be honest, it's a dirt and stone path around a mound of dirt. You really need to use your imagination at this place. There's no fort to go into your walk around a dirt path, not good for walkers or wheelchairs. You walk around the preimtier of the fort area, and there's signs that show you what each area was and how soldiers hid to defend the fort. It is a nice shaded area to walk, and I did learn something about the fort and the area. I definitely got a good mile walk-in, and it's not really hilly or a lot of tree roots in the path. They do take really good care of the maintenance of the area.

Small and unassuming, this fort plays a vital role in the story of African American heritage in the coastal area. Well signed, we learned much about the construction of the fort, its purpose and role in the Civil War. Still in cleanup stages from Hurricane Matthew, it was a little hard to image the layout, but it was a good size and walkable for my toddler. Well worth a stop for history buffs.

Other than the signboards you can read about the history of the fort, there is nothing to see here. The "FORT" is a raised area of ground, lots of trees and a lower area which is called the moat. It basically looked like every other hill with trees on it. Not even sure how they determined it WAS a fort. 😂🤣😁 At least there was no charge for admission and the trees were nice. It's really more of a historical site though, not what I'd pictured as a...
