Fort Mitchel is a nice piece of history and worth seeing if you are inside the Hilton Head Plantation. The fort is inside the gated community, so it's only worth visiting if you have another reason to be in the area. That said, there is some history here and plenty of signs explaining the site. The primary interest is that it is the only fort of its type built in the South by Union soldiers. The earthworks overlooking Skull Creek are still somewhat intact, and some walkways allow you to walk over them.

A nice little historical stop in a gated community. When entering we just said we were going here and they gave us a pass for our car, unfortunately that meant we weren't able to walk around any other parts of the area because it was specific to this one location. It's a nice stop though and we had it all to ourselves.

Enjoyed spending a bit of time to visit and learn the history. Not something we knew about on our 3 other visits to Hilton Head. You will need to ask the community guard for a pass to Ft. Mitchell. It is free. As you head back out of the community, there is Skull Creek Dockside restaurant. Great food and views.

Our 10-year-old LOVES everything military history. This was his choice for our last stop while we were in the area. Great for a short little hike with littles or elderly guests. It looks like this place isn't maintained as often as others, but it could be an amazing wedding venue with a little clean up. The shop wasn't open when we were there, but I would love to see inside it sometime. We will return in hopes that it gets a little attention. Some paint on the building and flowers here and there (even low-maintenance wildflowers) and I can see this being a very popular...

Neat little park. You have to enter through a security gate to reach the park. The remnants of the fort a barely recognizable as it has all collapsed in. If you follow the path across the bridge and view the fort from that side you can see where the old moat was and how the dirt was built up to form the fort. The cannons were pretty cool. One of them could still swivel showing how a soldier would take aim during the war. It took us about 5 minutes to see all there was to see...
