This park with hiking trail is not well known on Oahu. Which is actually quite amazing because it was one of the more enjoyable hikes that I've been on. I do have to say that while the view is decent, the attraction for me was in the actual hike experience. There are rocks to climb (none where you could potentially fall into an abyss) and varying challenges. I'd rate this as a pretty intensive hike so if you're not in decent shape you shouldn't attempt it. There is a restroom with doors on the stalls, but they don't lock... Which drives me nuts because I was desperate to use the restroom and I was so paranoid that someone was going to come in and open the stall door. Also, no paper towels or soap dispenser. I do have to say that the restroom was clean. There is a covered pavilion near the parking lot and when we returned from our hike a group of people were having a gathering. All in all, I'd day this hike is well worth exploring. Much of it is shady. My son hiked this trail previously with his boy scout troop and he said it started pouring rain while they were on their hike. It led to dangerous conditions because the water was cascading down the rocks that you have to climb. My advice is to not attempt this hike if it is raining. He is much more of a risk taker than I am and if he was scared I'd...
Read moreThis state park has a beautiful scenic view and a great place to have a picnic or to camp. It also has a trail that has a bit of everything from hiking through Pine trees to strawberry guava trees, climbing over rocks, dry and muddy paths, etc. Depending on your pace the hike could take up to 5-6 hours round trip. The terrains were a bit challenging and really muddy in certain areas as to be expected with the altitude. The hike to the top is definitely a journey where you'll see all kinds of trees, plants/flowers (some of which are almost completely covered in moss or fungus), and of course scenic views. When you get closer to the top, the path tends to be more windy with passing showers, so be mindful of that and plan ahead. With various terrains and scenery going once is not enough because it's breath taking. Also if you are hiking at the time of year where you see red fruit on the trees, those are waiawi or strawberry guava, in other words edible. I do recommend bring plenty of water as it is a bit of a workout. It tends to be muddy second half of the trail and even muddier if it rained the day of or day before. It could also gets pretty windy towards the second half depending on the day. A good pair of hiking boots/shoes is highly recommended, along with...
Read moreThe Waʻahila Ridge Trail is a popular hiking trail located in the Honolulu area on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaii. It's easier than going from Waikiki to the Tantalus Lookout at Puu Ualakaa State Park. It offers a moderate hike through a beautiful forested ridge with stunning views of the Koʻolau Mountain Range, Manoa Valley, and parts of the city of Honolulu.
Approximately about 2.4 miles round trip, but it can be extended to a more challenging hike by continuing along the ridge. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, and there are some steep sections that require careful footing. The trail passes through a lush forest with native plants like koa and ʻōhiʻa trees, and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. On clear days, you can see all the way to the ocean.
This hike is great for those looking for a relatively short but rewarding hike with great views and the opportunity to experience Hawaii's natural beauty. Just be prepared for some steep and potentially slippery sections, and always bring plenty of water and...
