I've driven by this a bunch of times and haven't ever hiked it until now. I feel kinda dumb. This hike is not very challenging at all, is not very long (maybe 2mi in and 2mi back out) plus it's incredibly rewarding. Lots of people and dogs but not too crowded, great just before sunset and the sights are so cool. Dense forest, couple water crossings on huge fallen logs with Handrails, not a lot of switchbacks, but still good elevation, lots of exposed tree roots, a large bouldering section with sloped rock valley and then a brief forest section again to the actual falls, which wasn't as tall as some in the gorge but it was just as impressive. Wide and open we definitely could've hung out here longer. You walk next to the East Fork Hood River basically the whole way and actually pass a lot of spots to get down into the water and probably about 3 sizable falls before getting to the end. I loved it and will definitely be back to take more time, have a picnic and see this place during some...
Read moreWe hiked Tamanawas Falls in the snow and it was straight-up magical. The trail winds through a quiet forest, with the sound of the river beside you most of the way — and then boom, you hit this frozen waterfall that looks like something out of Narnia.
The falls were mostly frozen, with huge icicles hanging off the cliff and mist turning everything nearby into sparkling ice. It’s stunning, but also super slick — especially when climbing over the boulders near the end. We definitely slipped a few times (pro tip: spikes or good traction are a must if it’s snowy).
One of the best parts? We packed in a little stove and made ramen near the falls. Sitting in the snow with hot noodles and that view was one of those “this is why we do this” moments.
It’s not a hard hike overall, but in winter it gets a little more adventurous. Totally worth it if you’re up for snow, ice, and a bit...
Read moreAwesome trail! My favorite of the ones we did this trip and a great way to spend a few hours if you don't have time for a longer trail or want to do multiple shorter ones.
The trail follows along the river which has lots of rapids and mini waterfalls, so it keeps you entertained along the way. Tamanawas falls is beautiful and you can get very close to it to get good pics or just play. Be careful though because it can get very muddy! My shoe sunk in to around ankle height trying to get closer to the falls. (Not obligatory to see the falls, just if you want to get super close). There's a bit of an incline and some parts of the trail are pretty narrow with the other side being a drop off so I'd recommend extra caution especially if there are youngn's.
We went on a shower-y Sunday and ended up having the waterfall to ourselves for about 30 minutes or so. ...
