We got a to-go order just to try the food after living near-by for a year and never trying it.
Food was overpriced, $28 for 2 adults and a 4 year old to eat. That was a hamburger/fries, chicken sandwich/fries, and a child's hamburger/fries. No appetizers, not even a drink. The lady had the gall to ask if I wanted to leave a tip.
Look, I sincerely don't mean to be rude or hateful, but for $9 you'd at least expect decent food. I'm not hard to impress.
I requested "everything on it" for my wife's, son's, and my own order. My chicken sandwich came with exactly: 2 bun havles, a chicken pattie, and a dab of mustard on it, and a sweet pickle on the side, and a moderate amount of potato wedges in a Styrofoam to-go container. The chicken was very watery and completely tasteless. I don't think a single spice was used. I'm not sure how you can pull off cooking chicken with less flavor than distilled water, but they did it and they were able to do it not only with chicken, but the beef patties for my wife's and son's burgers.
My wife got a mushroom burger and my 4-year-old son a regular cheese burger. Same story. Despite requesting "everything on it", the burgers all came as barren as a desert wasteland with meat patties that had less taste than a glass of water. My wife's and son's came with the burgers, a sweet pickle, the fries, and a packet of mayo. Yes, for $9/each they were nice enough to include a a packet of mayo.
Me and my son liked the pickle, the only item that had any flavor. It wasn't a normal sweet pickle, but not a dill pickle. My wife didn't like it. My son picked at his food for a while and finally ate half of it after we smothered it in his restaurant-given mayo and some ketchup from our own fridge.
The fries were soggy, and I mean grossly soggy but had a hint of flavor, at least. My son ate a good bit of the fries. The meat, despite being void of any flavor, was at least cooked thoroughly and not burned.
I just wouldn't go back. I feel bad because the place is very neat on the outside, and has a "museum" adjoined to it. I'd love to take my son there but I fear they would rob me blind.
So, to re-cap: My wife, son, and I ordered to-go food. Got served flavorless burgers with no "fixings" despite asking for "everything on it". Completely plain burgers and even the meat patties themselves were plain with seemingly no spices or anything at all. Fries were soggy and felt like the previous day's re-heated in a microwave. The only thing with flavor was the oddly flavored pickle served on the side. Got charged $28 or so for this (Over $9/person). But, the "Atmosphere" really is sort of neat.
If you are unfamiliar with the area, or are into locomotives, perhaps you should check out the museum (even though I'd hate to see the admission price), and if pressured into food tell them you've already eaten (there really isn't anything special in the dining area), and go to "The Patio" in Francesville, or even the Subway in Medaryville would be considered gourmet in comparison. And you'd save quite a bit of money.
Really wish I could get my...
Read moreHe's a semi driver and found out about this place through work because the owner has multiple businesses in Monon. I'll be honest, our kids weren't very excited coming in the door. We wanted to do a field trip with them because it's been a while. Some were disappointed with the choice because they had awesome past experiences on their minds waiting for the big surprise upon arrival only to find out it was somewhere they'd never been. This mood didn't last, however, with the amazing tour ahead. There were ten of us so it was a little pricey for a crowd but reasonable. After the tour it was obvious that what we were in store for was well worth every penny!! It was our first time so we didn't know that until afterwards. The tour guide was so cool and he worked hard to make sure we all had a great time! (Inspirational for kids that have social anxiety to watch him perform.) Finally, we went on to dinner where everyone loved the food. The older kids talked about the popcorn chicken for the rest of the day. They recommend mozzarella sticks and popcorn chicken but I say if coconut shrimp is something you might enjoy but not sure, do it 😋 We highly recommend The Whistle Stop because through the next day we're still whistling a happy tune over an incredible experience we're glad we...
Read moreWe have driven by this place hundreds of times going up to North Judson and finally decided to stop and try it. With entrees you can get soup or salad and another side and the menu also states a scoop of ice cream for dessert. Our daughter ordered the baked potato that had pulled pork and several other things on it , they were out of the first side she chose and the second side so she ended up getting mushrooms. I hot the ground steak topped with onions, mushrooms and cheese. It was ok but a little salty . My husband ordered the tenderloin sandwich which was very good. My daughers potato came with out the jalapenos and the sour cream which she really wanted but we didn't say anything they were probably out. At the end we asked for our ice cream and was told unfortunately they don't do that anymore , then take it off the menu or put a note that they don't do that anymore. Being said the food was just ok. Then we go up to pay and the young girl at the register was doing something which understandably but didn't even acknowledge us by saying be with you in a minute. Other people walked in and she helped them . Then she took our receipt and our money handed back our change i said thank you and nothing back from her. As we were walking out told my husband...
