We swung by the Black River Harbor Recreation Area in Ottawa National Forest to see a couple waterfalls while passing through the area. There are at least 5 waterfalls along Black River hear, but we didn't have much time, so picked Gorge & Potawatomi Falls as best bang for the buck. There is a forest service parking area along the road and a short trail leads to the waterfalls. Gorge Falls runs through a narrow gorge of volcanic rocks. Potawatomi Falls drops over two domes of volcanic rock and is very unique waterfall. North County Trail runs through the area as well to provide access to the other waterfalls along Black River. Read moreThis parking area gives you the opportunity to visit two waterfalls, and I will remind you, there are lots of stairs here, but it's worth it to see it! Both falls have a nice overlook area that the trails take you to. The path is easy to traverse, but not paved. This is not a place for strollers, as there are a lot of steps. There is no real climbing needed, outside of the stairs. I would say even smaller children could do this, but keep them close, and know you might have to carry them at some point. Absolutely worth seeing if you’re in the area. Not a difficult walk from the parking lot to the falls via the paved paths. There’s a boardwalk that takes you between the two falls and allows you to take a loop back to your car via the driveway, though there are stairs and they’re a bit rickety.
