We enjoyed our time at the Ashe county history museum. Entry is free. There is a spot where you can make a donation if you choose to. The best part was the staff. Each staff member was so friendly and a fount of knowledge. We learned a lot about the local area and history of the town, military participation, commerce and daily life. Each room features a different exhibit. One of my favorites was the mining depiction and visual and written history. We also really learning about the Virginia Creeper and the history of the train. We have biked parts of the Virginia Creeper trail so it was really interesting to learn about the history behind the name. Upstairs is the original courtroom that has been renovated. They will be hosting musical events in the future which is how it was historically used as well as being the center of government for the area. We had such a great time! There are clean restrooms, a small gift shop, and...

Oh what a wonderful experience! Lynn greeted us so sweetly, and knew so very much! We loved her! The other lady in the gift shop was also so incredibly sweet and helpful! It is free admission, although they have a donation box, and we left a mild donation. We bought things from the gift shop. I got a magnet with the old train on it. The place is sparkling clean, and the antiques are beautiful. They have a rich history, and Lynn can answer any questions! This is a very family friendly place, but I think couples or anyone who likes a relaxing day with antiques would also love it. The bathrooms were also spotless. I hope to go again and next time...

What an amazing display of so much history. I went in thinking this was probably a boring and unconventional museum, as it was inside the old courthouse. But boy was I wrong!!! Mrs. Gwen was the best tour giver you could ask for! They have an amazing display of the history of this county, from the mineral mines and trains, to the veteran memorials, the churches and different religions, Native Americans to the modern day. It covers it all. And it's so well laid out and has been well designed to display the counties history to young and old! Awesome...

After eleven years in Ashe County I finally dropped by and wondered how I missed this NC mountain treasure. The museum is fantastic with wonderful exhibits on native American culture and artifacts, esrly Appalachian settlers, an amazing WWI room, a working VA Creeper model railroad layout and much moore. The gift shop had resources on Ashe County and the High Country I have found no where else. Finally, the volunteer who toured me around was a living treasure. Be sure to drop by and give yourself around an hour.
