We made the drive here from Boise for the first time ever. First thing, there are two parking areas. One is right off the road, the other you drive down the fort road for about a mile. I recommend driving in to the second area. Beautiful scenery and the water is amazing. There is a small waterfall, compared to Shoshone Falls, but it is really powerful and beautiful. At the end of the river there is a place where people were swimming in the crystal clear water. At that point a lot of people head back out the way they came. We decided to do the loop (alltrails app). It pretty much followed the service road out. Not great, but you get a good view of the Snake River and what looked like a fish hatchery with a small waterfall servicing the hatchery.

Google takes you right to the parking lot as of May 2019. Currently they are building a new lot closer to the actual canyon so you don't have to walk the extra .5 miles. Parking fee us $5 unless you have the state parking pass. Box Canyon is park of Thousand Springs State Park.

Absolutely beautiful park. Parking near the overlook is convenient for those that can't make the intermediate level hike to the bottom diversion pool. Watch the trail and make sure to avoid stinking nettle and poison oak known to take root around water.

Parking lot costs $5. It's pretty informal. They just have an envelope that you fill out and pay with in a small box. There is free parking right by the road, but it's a bit of a walk from there. If you park near the Port-a-potties, you have to pay parking. Plus, the road is a little more rough before that parking lot. Nice and informal. Plenty of space for busy days, but it's a fairly unheard of place, so I don't think it's super busy...

Bring water! And a sandwich because it's a nice little picnic at the water when you get to the bottom of the canyon. Long sleeves recommended on the walk down, but not necessary if you can stay away from the edges of the path. It's slippery and steep, but a really pleasant...
