Definitely an experience to have on your Idaho bucket list, however its not for everyone. Biggest Take Home: Dont even think about going without water!! I saw so many people head down with nothing, its a hike people! You're gonna need the water! Those who arent physically in shape should proceed with caution. The trail head down the canyon is very steep and uses alot of knee power to get you down the rocks while holding on to the cable provided. The trail is narrow and lined with poison oak and stinging nettle so look out for all of that! The waterfall is amazing and the crystal clear waters are breaktaking. Walk all the way to very last pool where you can go swimming if you brave the 50 degree water. We did attempt to go fishing and only saw very tiny 3 inch trout but there are fish, and maybe you'll have better luck! Now as for how to get out? You can come the same way you came in OR! Follow the service road at the last pool, you'll clearly see it and many people go out that way cause its easier but still a trek and the sun beats on you the whole time. So it can get really toasty, but definitely easier if the rock climb down got the...
Read moreFirst, views of the canyon and the pools below are simply stunning...we were reminded of Caribbean coral reefs in the middle of Idaho! But as we found with all Idaho state parks, the signage was terrible, facilities were sparse, and visitor information was non-existent. We learned from some fellow visitors that there was a (very non-intuitive) trail down into the canyon to access the pools below. So we set out.
The trail into the canyon was steep, but manageable. Once in the canyon, though, the trail was heavily overgrown with vegetation, making it tough for my kids who were wearing shorts on a hot summer day. The trail appeared to peter out in some locations, but actually took some bouldering to find it again. Despite being experienced hikers with reasonably good gear, we called it quits about halfway through out of safety concerns.
So my recommendation: Do this hike early morning to avoid the heat of afternoon, and give yourself at least a half day to get in and...
Read moreAugust of 2020 I came back home to visit family. With this trip I wanted to visit certain places I hadn't been since I was a kid, but I also wanted to go for hikes at parks I'd never been to either. One day when visiting with my SIL and neice and nephew I told my SIL that I wanted to go for a hike and explore. She suggested Box Canyon State Park as it is a place she goes and it's a nice short distanced hike. Upon arrival I was just in awe. Water was super low but the thing I love about the southern part of Idaho, when visiting certain places it's just so quiet and peaceful. I defintely would like to go back when it's more full, curious to see the comparisons. I can't wait to go back and do more exploring in Idaho. I'm excited to see what all I've been missing. I implore you to do the same and take lots...
