A beautiful, peaceful church/shrine/garden in a remote part of Alaska! Drive north a little ways up the road from Juneau and you’ll by met by this wonderful place. Even if you aren’t religious, it is worth the visit because the area in which it’s located is just so beautiful! It’s out on a little peninsula in the bay, and there’s a little walkway out to the church where you can frequently see groundhogs dodging in and out of rocks! If you’re quiet, you can even get quite close to them because they’re very curious!

The church itself is in great shape and I would imagine any mass or ceremony would be wonderful inside (we visited on a weekday, unfortunately). You could still freely enter, though, and even climb to the second floor to get a good view of the pews below.

The church has a garden back across the walkway on the mainland portion, and overall the area is very well-kept. Can’t wait to come back one day to see this beautiful...

What a beautiful shrine a d surrounding property. There is a gravel lot for parking and a short steep trail down to the bathroom and retreat buildings. The bathrooms were heated and very clean, which was nice this time of year. Not far from that were some of the well maintained planting areas and the gift shop. But the real gem is the causeway to the island where the shrine to St Therese is. The walk is great out to the wooded island, with plenty of sea and land animals being seen to either side. Once you reach the island, there is a trail with a series of small shrines about the life of Jesus, statuary, and peaceful quiet. Inside the beautiful church is a guest book, a place to buy a Saint's pendant, and plenty of pews to sit in quiet reflection. I'm so glad we took the time to come out here as it was a highlight of our...

This is an outstanding beautiful, serene place tucked away off the main road about 20 minutes outside the city. It is a lovey drive out out to St Therese. Once you pull into this lovely venue, you know you have found a place where you can enjoy yourself and your thoughts. The grounds are very well kept and the Zen or Reflection Garden is very beautiful. Guests are free to roam about the property at their leisure unfettered. It is a nice little walk over to the Shrine set apart from the main property on a small island giving an extra sense of serenity and separation. The surrounding scenery with the water and mountains in the background is breathtaking. This could easily be described as one's...

Great place for mindfulness practice, meditation, contemplation, solitude, and observation of nature. A favorite with locals, this donation-based Retreat Center is open to the public on a daily basis (safe for when there is a retreat, so check the website!). Enjoy great views of Gastineau Channel, friendly visitors and staff, a carefully made labyrinth, short hikes, native and exotic flora, carefully tended flower gardens, local fauna including resident marmots🐾 and opportunities for whale🐋🐳watching, picnic tables, a constantly evolving Cairn Zen Rock Garden by the beach, a coffee shop, and religious paraphernalia.
