My aunt, uncle, and I loved this place. Making notes/tips for the future.
You don't have to do the drive-thru safari. For free, you can visit the gift shop, a petting zoo, see the giraffes, and an aviary. If you want to feed any of those critters, there may be a fee.
The gift shop has tons of stuff, from funny shirts to exotic plushies. Axolotl, anyone?
The giraffes were beautiful and huge. Reminded me of the book, "West with Giraffes."
The aviary seemed meh when I first entered. But, as I walked through, I suddenly became aware of how many birds/budgies were in there! It was really quite a unique surprise.
As for the safari itself: It was great! Tips for that:
Prep.
Bring your beater car, because animals will be all over it. Front, side, sticking their heads inside. Drooling. Food pellets will fall all over. That's part of the fun.
Plan your video/photo angles. You're not supposed to leave the car or even open any doors, including on your minivan. So to get a shot from the outside looking toward your car, you'd need a selfie stick.
Plan to buy food for the animals. It's $5/bowl. One per person is standard.
Bring containers/ziplocs for the food. That's because for each $5 bowl, you get a full plastic bowl. But, if you let an animal eat out of it, it'll instantly spill a ton, and try to eat it all. It might even grab the bowl and now you've lost all your food with the first animal. Instead, once you get your bowls of food, pour them all into a storage container. Then, take a little out, and put it back in the plastic bowl. Now you can feed an animal without fear of 1) spilling everywhere, 2) using up all your food at once. Just make sure your storage container is secure.
They have a military discount, which applies to the whole family/car.
At the pay booth, where you first can get food bowls, ask how many other food booths are open that day. We went on a slow afternoon, so all the other food booths were unmanned and we couldn't buy any more food without going all the way to the start. That said, I think when you pay, you are getting full in/out privileges for the day.
Take lots of pics and videos! Compared to a petting zoo, there's just something different about feeding animals from your car! It's really a...
Β Β Β Read moreWe had a great time at Texas Zoofari Safari! One of the highlights was how long the safari trail was β definitely felt like a full experience. A little tip: ration out the animal feed, because the drive is filled with animals, and youβll want to have enough for the whole way. We mostly saw llamas, emus, and cows, but the zebra was such a fun surprise!
The walk-through area was another favorite part, especially feeding the beautiful giraffes and goats. Didnβt have enough time to see the bird aviary
Thereβs also a small picnic area, playground for the kids, and a gift shop, which made it a nice spot to spend extra time after the drive.
If I had one suggestion, it would be to expand the hours for the walk-through area. Right now it closes at 5:30pm, and we felt like a little more time in the evenings would be perfect. Overall, a wonderful experience and highly recommended!
βοΈ Helpful tips βοΈ β’ Ration your feed β Donβt hand it all out at the start! Some animals (especially the llamas, cows, and emus) will try to eat most of it right away. We found it easiest to dump the bag into a larger container or plastic bag in the car and refill the cups little by little as we went along. β’ Hang on to your cups β Camels are sneaky and will happily take the entire cup out of your hands π€. Better to keep extras on hand so you donβt run out too early. β’ Plan for the walk-through area β It closes right at 5:30 PM, so make sure to leave time at the end of your drive-through safari. This part includes giraffe feedings, the kangaroo enclosure, bird aviary, and goat feedingsβdefinitely worth it! β’ Enjoy the extras β Thereβs also a small playground and picnic area thatβs perfect for little kids to stretch out and play...
Β Β Β Read moreWe enjoyed the experience! I reviewed the visitor details on website prior to visit and knew the last vehicle was accepted at 3:30p so all the 1 star reviews complaining about close time issue: either they didnβt bother to read info online prior to visit or perhaps the facility did not have that info posted anywhere online at that time and have since changed due to feedback. Associate at entry was nice and we didnβt really have a wait to pay for tickets and acquire our feed buckets. I didnβt mind the entry cost (we werenβt expecting anything less than what was paid as the maintenance and upkeep of such a facility warrants this type of admission fee) and it was convenient to have feed bucket refill stations along the drive as we almost ran out of both buckets within one mile. We ran out of time due to our schedule and didnβt have time for petting zoo so I canβt speak for that part of the venue. The scenic drive overall was nice and clean, an employee was getting out of truck periodically to remove animal waste. One βconβ is I do agree with other reviewers - there is a very large amount of llamas compared to the few zebras, two rhinos, 3 camels and other animals we saw along the drive. Might also be nice to have more signage along the drive perhaps highlighting animals or providing updates on how many more miles are ahead. Iβd recommend this venue to others and will likely return myself just for a few hours of fun...
