Read moreI discovered this park "by accident" six months ago on a walk from Hogan Park along the Green River Trail. I had never ventured past Russell Woods but decided to do so and ended up at Van Doren. I live nearby so this has become my go-to park for walking. I have explored the paved paths on both sides of the river using the pedestrian bridge. I also recently walked some of the trails in the Green River Natural Area. I have seen coyotes and four different bird species besides the ubiquitous geese and ducks. Yes, there is goose poop! The geese live here - we don't, so deal with it!
Clean restrooms, thoughtfully-spaced picnic tables and shelters. The park even has Adirondack chairs! The playground and pickleball court also look fun.
Sadly, today two young women were defacing the walkways near the restrooms by writing religious messages using sidewalk chalk. This is a public space, not a forum for religious propaganda. I reported it to a Kent Parks maintenance employee who should not have to spend time cleaning this stuff; I would rather my tax money be spent on park safety and comfort. Shame on people who damage...
Read moreFantastic, nice upgrades on this park after the needed improvements on the levy. The park is along Green River Trail. Miles and miles of biking, walking, views, relaxing along the river. An eagle flew over as I was there, 4 otters in the river having a nice playful swim. The river is running fast, high and cold right now with the spring runoff, potential danger for small kids and everyone for that matter. Use caution along the banks! Has a parking area. Fun activities for the kids. Playground, zip line, swings, covered picnic building for family gatherings, view tower, benches for old folks like me. Has some restrooms on site with a drinking fountain. Looks like it may be a dog friendly park with a leash, of course. The park was not fully opened on May 03, 2023. The grass is still growing, some areas are fenced off, looks like soon. Thanks, King...
