There's a regular parking lot directly next to this roadside dirt parking if you would prefer to park on asphalt and walk about 30 seconds to the trailhead. The trailhead is NOT marked in any way. No sign, no tree markers, no mention of the waterfall to be seen. But it is this dirt path along the side of the road.
My round trip to the waterfall and back was 4.2 miles, and I crossed back and forth over the creek 12 times total. The creek was low and there were rocks to walk across, but if you go after it rains be prepared to walk through water to get to the waterfall.
There are also lots of downed trees along the trail, and even downed trees at the waterfall. The waterfall is still wonderful, but is now a bit cluttered at the bottom as trees fell from above. I went on a Sunday morning just after sunrise and had the whole hike to myself. Even though there were several cars around, I didn't see anyone which made it even better. The hike itself is not difficult, but the creek crossings and lack of trail markings with downed trees can make it challenging. I recommend downloading(no AT&T phone service here) the map on "AllTrails" to keep track of progress and where the...
Read moreMy friend and I did this hike for the first time a couple days ago. It is a beautiful and technical creek hike with lots of gorgeous boulders and smaller waterfalls, a cave, arches, and of course Copperas Falls! Also the entire length of this trail is surrounded by a thick rhodedendron grove. You will likely be sharing the falls with others, unless you come midweek.
This hike requires quite a few creek crossings and there are many downed tress to maneuver around. It appears as though a large storm likely went through recently. There are many enchanting areas to explore around the creek as well.
We also included Hopewell Arch in our hike. It is a wonderful arch that we had all to ourselves. I DO NOT recommend following All Trails to try to find the other arches, unless you want to fight through a very thick Rhodedendron jungle, with steep incline. Also, this hike for us ended up being more like 6.25 miles (would have provably been like 5 without our adventuring).
Highly...
Read moreWhat a fun trail. At first we accidently hiked up red River instead of the tributary, then doubled back and got on the right trail. Very jungle like - moist and humid all the way through. No chance of starting a fire with wood that's been wet for weeks.
The fall itself is small but loud and lively. Frog calls at night reflect off the overhang of the falls and makes some very ominous sounds.
We set our hammocks right at the mouth of the falls and it was comfortable. The pond that the falls drip into is murky and clack with leaves. We did not go in.
Overall a good workout, a good hike and...
