If you’re looking for a truly unique Texas experience that blends rich history, beautiful scenery, and a touch of old-world charm, Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites in La Grange is a must-visit. This hidden gem offers a fascinating glimpse into the state’s early brewing heritage and honors Texas heroes, all set atop a scenic bluff with sweeping views of the Colorado River. The grounds are immaculately maintained, with well-marked trails that wind through native woods and lead you past the impressive ruins of one of Texas’ first commercial breweries—founded by German immigrant and master stonemason Heinrich Kreische in the 1860s. The story of Kreische’s Bluff Beer and the “Frisch Auf!” banner is brought to life through interpretive signs and restored historical structures, including the original three-story Kreische home, which is furnished with authentic period pieces. History buffs will appreciate the significance of Monument Hill, where a striking memorial marks the resting place of men lost in the Dawson Massacre and the infamous Black Bean Episode. The site’s visitor center provides thoughtful context, and the friendly staff are always eager to share stories or answer questions. Nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy, from panoramic river vistas to shaded picnic areas and accessible trails. The park is perfect for a peaceful hike, a family outing, or even a reflective solo stroll. Special events like the annual Bluff Schuetzenfest bring the site’s German heritage to life with music, games, and even historically-inspired beer tastings. Whether you’re interested in Texas history, architectural craftsmanship, or simply want a relaxing day outdoors, Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill delivers on all fronts. Don’t miss this well-preserved slice of Texas heritage—highly recommended for all ages and...

This central Texas park is a hidden gem, located in a pristine spot overlooking beautiful views of La Grange, Texas. Whether you are a nature lover looking for a relaxing walk in the Texas landscape or looking to learn about the thick history of the area you will be pleased to spend time at this small and quiet park. My family and I have visited the park on many occasions and every time is better than the last. The staff is friendly and eager to help. I have even gone, when the weather is not too hot, for a run on some of the wooded trails. In the spring they hold a festival with local flavors and demonstrations of crafting techniques that are all but forgotten. so whether you enjoy a nice local pint or some of the best sauerkraut I've ever had (and I've had a lot). I'd suggest you stop by and enjoy the heritage while listening to local artists and enjoying the...

Stonehenge, but for beer? This state park is one on the best kept I have ever had the pleasure of strolling through. The grounds are so very well kept, so well kept infact you can feel the history surrounding you as you walk the trails that echo the footsteps of the men who settled this untamed piece of wilderness before us. Quarried from the surrounding land, the brewery remains are nothing less then breath taking. Every stone has a story it could tell and there are hundreds of thousands of stones all combining to show the ultimate price to pay for a tall frosty cold one. The cherry on top, Monument Hill, a view over all of LA Grange, the valley as well as the Colorado River. Pictures just can not do it justice. Definitely make time to visit Kreische Brewery State Park if you are in the area. Disappointment is not possible.

*watch out for...

Worth the trip to La Grange, TX, to check out! Monument Hill, Kreische Home & Brewery State historic sites sit on a sandstone bluff above the Colorado River. Beautiful views of the river, town & scenery in the area. Monument Hill is a crypt and memorial to the men who died in the Dawson Massacre and in the “Black Bean” episode of the ill-fated Mier Expedition. Literally, they had to draw a bean to see who would die or not. 😮 The house and brewery have a lot of historic information on building strategies at the time. Kreische was quite accomplished in many endeavors. A reasonable $4/each to enter the parks. No tours right now with CoVid - but you can easily self tour. A small bit of walking - but manageable. A quite worthwhile stop!
