Debated writing this for a few days, but I feel people should know. Giving 2 stars merely for the natural beauty of the place. Truly a natural wonder, however.. If you visit, watch out for the old, white guy park ranger. What an absolutely mean human being! I have been prematurely judged based on my appearance most of my life, but this still surprised me. Thought this would be an amicable exchange, but that facade quickly fell. I was very polite and never once raised my voice, yet this guy was immediately hostile and condescending. I had a question regarding the park, and he acted like it was the dumbest thing he’d ever heard. Isn’t that part of a park ranger’s duties? To provide necessary and useful park information? Guy had his hand on his side belt the whole time as though he were about to pull a weapon. I strongly suspect this to be a racial issue, especially after encountering others with similar stories. We passed a non-white family on the way out, and the mother told us a similar experience. Her young child had been so scared of this ranger, that the kid cried back at the car - asking ‘why the cop was so mean.’ Interestingly enough, shortly before our encounter this same ranger was seen being quite pleasant to a white family. Can’t believe tax dollars go to pay people like this! They really forget they’re civil servants. Although what can you expect from a state government that doesn’t place importance on natural resource management. Per their own public statement. Have visited here many times over the years but not sure we will ever go back.
Side note, the ranger also somehow missed the cyclist that was nearly run off the road by a large suv. Cyclist tried to gesture to the driver that he was too close but driver didn’t care. So if you’re on a...
Read moreThe trail is great but it is very challenging. There are signs posted that say the waterfall trail is closed so you need to understand that before you go.
Here are some details - If you want to see the bottom of the waterfalls you can still walk the trail over. It is clear and fairly simple to walk through but only to the bottom.
If you want to see the mid and upper portion you have 2 options:
The best, and safest option is to take the overlook trail. It is challenging as it is pretty long and steep. The trail is well marked so it’s easy to follow and the path is basically just one long set of rock steps. But understand that it is a climb up the mountain, one step after another.
The second option, and I would not recommend m, is to attempt to climb up the closed trail. It is not marked hardly at all and is no joke. You will definitely need to wear good boots and be prepared for a semi-expert level climb. If you have any doubts, just go the other way.
Great views but be warned that this is not an easy trail so come prepared...
Read moreIf you are looking for a simple hike to a beautiful waterfall In the Appalachians. You're in the wrong place. Let me reiterate, the trail up is brutal if you aren't properly prepared, IE: Hiking boots. But the end result is worth it.
Note: the main trail is closed due to safety concerns, but there are two other trails that will take you to the lookout and the waterfall. I HIGHLY recommend you find a trail map before attempting this hike, or go with someone who has already undertaken the hole...
