The middle area of the Lehigh Gorge State Park is Rockport. There are several hiking trails here including the relatively hard Vista Trail which leads to a spectacular view, and the Bald Mountain Trail. There are also some nice streams running down to the Lehigh River. This area also has a hand launch boat area. There is a limited amount of parking in this area. (pictures 1-3). Here some information about the rest of the park. The Lehigh Gorge State Park has 33 miles of hiking and 26 miles of biking trails that follow the Lehigh River. North of Rockport is the tall Buttermilk Falls. (picture 6). There's also a small parking area to the north where a trail leads to the ruins of a tannery. (pictures 9 and 10). At the Whitehaven end of the park, there's a bike rental place which also offers pick up service for your return trip. (Picture 14). This section of the park was recently upgraded and re-opened in 2023. Improvements include four handicap bathrooms large enough to bring your bike inside with you. (Picture 15). Also new is an extra-large boat launch area which can accommodate both the whitewater excursions and the individual boaters. (Pictures 9-11). Somewhat inconvenient is the requirement to park vehicles up the hill after disembarking. The main entrance in White Haven is off rt 940. Most people consider the Glen Onoko area to the south to be the end of the trail, others the beginning. Since the trail is slightly more downhill from White Haven to Glen Onoko, it's an easier bike ride than doing it in reverse. Glen Onoko has several long parking lots, but only a primitive outhouse facility. A hand launch boat ramp is nearby. Nice views of railroad bridges and the nearby mountains make this section visually fun. There's a wood plank bridge you can drive over which makes lots of noise and is a little scary. Read moreThis area is stock by the Pennsylvania Fish and Game Commission and The Lehigh Valley Fishing Association at different times during Trout season. This year the stocking was lighter, but still plenty of fish to catch. This area is gorgeous with mountains surrounding you and a beautifully kept little town that is full of historical buildings that look amazing for their age. This town us Jim Thorpe PA, but it is so breathtaking and unique, that it is known as "The Switzerland of America" for very good reason. This location is also within 15 minutes of Walmart and their are many stores closer as well. So if you forgot or need any fishing tackle, coffee, or many other things, you are not far away. I suggest waders while fishing this area to hit all the "honey holes" out in deeper water. Beware of the current, it runs fast and occasionally pulse or shift slightly. My tecgnique is to avoid stepping on larger rocks and let my feet sink in with the smaller stones and sediment. I also advise using a wader walking staff, or just a large straight stick to use for balance and traction. I have found the best lures to be spoons, like Panther Martins which I use. Next level advice: Make sure you attach a spinner to your line to keep it from bird nesting your reel. Due to the speed of the river it makes a big difference and I don't know about you, but playing with messed up line all day ruins the experience for me. I'll be posting pictures of my lures and spinners in the future for clarification. Their are also some local tributary creeks that are quieter and fun to fish as well. Hope that helps...now go catch a lunker...
