Fascinating history, process, business, and great whiskey. I think a review of a business like this needs to be split up into two sections. First, the tour. Zeb Williams, one of the co-owners, gave us our tour. He's a descendant of the original Nick Williams, and the co-founder of the current business. The history behind the distillery is fascinating, and the current distillery is built on the foundation of the original barrel house. After learning about the heritage, we move onto the process of making the whiskey. Theirs is a wheated bourbon (corn, wheat & barley in the mash bill, IIRC), and you get shown how it happens from the raw corn to the bottling. Finally, the tasting. You get to sample the unaged corn whiskey, and the bourbon. Both are very smooth and sippable, and stand on their own when drunk neat. There's also an opportunity to mix them with various other things to make a mixed drink. A lot of fun, and you get to chat with the staff, who are clearly passionate about the business.
As for the one star review, in my opinion, you should disregard it. It's clear that they didn't care for the product. That's OK; there are many other bourbon recipes, or other liquors, and everyone has different likes and dislikes. Not liking a product on a tour is not a valid reason for a one star review.
Go visit these folks, support a local business, support the resurrection of a family tradition. I don't think you'll be...
Read moreStumbled across this place after leaving Westbend winery, which is a few miles down the road. Did the distillery tour and tasting for $10. It was great to learn about the area and the family history dating back to 1700s. It was shocking to learn how much control and money the state makes from families just trying to make a living! I'm not big on whiskey but thought that their clear Carolina Whiskey was mild and smoothe enough for sipping straight. Their bourbon was much stronger flavor that I probably wouldn't sip straight, but would enjoy as a mixed drink. My friend who loves whiskey thought it was great straight. The tour was educational and the owners very friendly. They now have Puerto Rican style rum made bit await label, approval from the state before they can sell. Please buy direct from the distiller if possible so they'll get an extra $2 per bottle, instead of the "revenoors" getting it. It's a pretty drive in the country and worth a visit. Update 02/03/19 They recently added onto the front of their building and now have more merchandise and longer bar. Have a great Wall of family history. Very...
Read moreMy wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the distillery back on Aug 18th. Met with owner Zeb williams after we walked in and took the tour with Zeb as our tour guide. Very informative and his passion for his craft is evident, We had already seen the episode of the Distillery on the discovery channel so it was very nice to meet one of the stars, Zeb is a down to earth modest gentlemen, and the tour was just great. The history they have in the building is mind boggling, really neat. after our tasting we purchased 6 bottles and 2 very great cigars to bring back with us to New York. we also got to meet Zeb's mother and Father, super nice folks, Mrs. Willams must have spoken with us for over an hour after the tour along with Zeb. Great folks, there bourbon is very good. So much family history! I hope one day to be able to purchase their products up here in NY, but with my daughter attending college in NC it will be fine just to stop in now and then. If you get a chance don't pass up this tour, it's really something! And there...
