The historical significance of this property stretches back to the early 20th Century. Loretto, PA was the boyhood home of Steel Titan Charles M. Schwab. After being the right hand man of Andrew Carnegie, helping to found and being the first president of US Steel, and then founding Bethlehem Steel Corp, Schwab decided to build his summer home here after moving another house a few hundred feet off the property. Originally smaller than it is now, with a new addition built with the same materials by the Friars to accommodate their needs, the home served Schwab until his death in 1939. Complete with a golf course nearby and a stock ticker, it was one of Schwab's favorite places to be outside his monstrous New York Riverside mansion.
