Not an easy hike, so don't take people who haven't hiked before. But it's very beautiful with a great view at the top. To give a hint of the difficulty: there's a stretch where it helps to use your hands as well as your feet to climb the bare rock.
To go back down the steep, gravelly slope, either (a) possess a great sense of balance; (b) use hiking poles; (c) take the long but gentle route: continue north, then right on the Backbone Trail to Will Rogers Park, completing your journey on city streets.
You can shorten the distance and climb a bit less by using the trailhead at the top of Chatauqua Boulevard as your starting point. Look at Google satellite view to find the connecting paths.
