Went on a Saturday at 3:00 p.m and there were only a few people in the museum. The museum has it's own parking lot, and very clear signage on where to go. The hangar which the museum is located within (also very historic), sits right outside of the airport, and gives great views of some small planes taking off and landing.
When you enter, you walk straight into the gift shop where you will be charged admission. $14 per adult is definitely worth it for all of the work they do to maintain the planes, and add new exhibits to the museum. There's no real layout, or order you have to follow, but working clockwise around the museum is best. You can spend an hour here and see everything, or 3 hours if you want to stop and read every single thing. You're able to climb some stairs and walk right next to mostly all of the planes, and there are a few that you can even sit in. They also have a few exhibits that are unique to Cape May during WWII, and about 3 flight simulators (Flight Simulator X).
I would absolutely return to the museum in another year or 2 when they have some new exhibits. I recommend checking out the museum right across the street (free!), before or after...
Read moreSpent weekends and 13 summers in Wildwood but never knew about the Naval Air Station at the airport until a sign caught my eye on Rt.9. Decided to take it in before we left from visiting family and glad we did. Enough aircraft and variety for an aviation enthusiast to spend hours up close and personal with the hardware. The history of the air station was intriguing to say the least. The display in the museum dedicated to the men who graduated from there to fly in WWII and the men who never made it home after dying during their training as Dive Bomber pilots and crews is beautiful. The reverence and remembrance of all these brave men has been handled with great care befitting their gallant service to our country. James, our guide, was magnificent with his knowledge of the base and the equipment on display. So a “snappy salute” to him for his time that afternoon. We will definitely return on our next trip to Cape May County. By the way, for anyone itching to take the F14 Tomcat parked outside the hanger for a joyride off of Cape May, FORGET IT !! The Engine Crank Switch has been removed…….I Checked !!! Ed...
Read moreTHE LONGEST YARN exhibit about D-Day in WWII is fantastic and enjoyable for young and old alike. The scenes from D-Day, all knitted, are extremely artistic and well made. The collection is extensive. We highly recommend you visit this special exhibit. The museum itself is very nice. We take our grandsons to this museum one or two times a year and they never grow old of it, nor do we adults. We always find something new that we missed on a previous visit or that has been added to the collection. The museum is in a large, cavernous hanger so if you come on a cold day expect to wear your jacket inside. The museum is somewhat pricey (4 adults and 3 kids under 3 ran $66) but we never regret our visits. There are lots of aircraft and other vehicles for kids to sit in and experience and some very interesting exhibits - particularly those about the locals involved with the air base during WWII. We wish the museum was open on weekends during the off season, but assume it just doesn't get the volume of guests it needs to be open then. Definitely worth...
