You're watching the sun set over the ocean, and you're on the East Coast. Wait what? The sun sets over the Delaware Bay at this idyllic location. Free easy parking at the gift shop. Walk down to the water, turn right, past the fishermen and dog walkers, walk for about 15 minutes and you'll find it's nearly deserted right by where a creek runs into the bay (right before the nude beach) control yourself. Part of the Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area. Nice sand. A few mosquitoes. Swimming is possible but not really recommended. Swim on the ocean and not in the bay.

Breathtaking sunsets, bicycle rides on the Promenade, and searching for beautiful Cape May diamonds along the shoreline, this is one of the most magical places on earth. All within one scan of its landscape one can view the remnants of the SS Atlantus, the lighthouse, the WWII Lookout Tower, and the ferry that travels back and forth between Cape May to Lewes, Delaware. Regardless of the cold or wet weather you will always see someone enjoying the sights and sounds of the ocean at Sunset Beach. This is a special place.

Sunset Beach is not a great beach for swimming; it is best suited for passive beach activities such as sunbathing and photography. But the photo ops are the major selling point of this beach, particularly the sunsets, which are absolutely spectacular, and the Wreck of the SS ATLANTUS (see my review for more information), which is just 150 feet off shore. Sunset Beach is a small complex also, with gift shops, a seafood eatery, and a miniature golf course as well.

As a warning, this beach can get a bit crowded around sunset, as it's obviously one of only a handful of beaches on the East Coast where you can watch the sun set on the ocean (hence the name). If you want to watch or take unobstructed photos of the sunset, get there early and walk as far up or down the beach as you can--many people arrive only minutes from sunset and settle on the beach directly in front of the parking lot. If you're not up for a walk that's fine too, just understand that many people want to get photos of the lovely sunset and may walk directly in your line of sight to snap a shot. It is a public beach so please don't forget to be kind to others who want to enjoy the beautiful...
