I started from 'Whiteoak Canyon Falls Upper Trailhead' ( Skyline Dr) and took the picture of the map for my reference.  The trailhead/parking is located between Milepost 40 and 45 and It is very near to Skyland. It took 1hr 20min to reach the Upper falls and you can hear the stream after 45 minutes of walking. The rest of the walk would be more along with streams and you definitely enjoy it. Trail to the upper falls is very decent and downhill. So we should prepare and keep the stamina to hike steep uphill all the way back to the parking lot. I tried the 4th of the mile to Lower falls from Upper falls and it is a very narrow and rocky staircase and you can see sign post alerting hikers with the message "Do not exceed your hiking ability".  When I returned to the Upper Falls, I was completely drenched with sweat.  So if you want to see Lower falls, prepare well, trail sticks...

I hiked the lower trail in the spring of 2021,basically just along the stream, not sure reached the mid point or not. There were lots of bugs and dead branches. I saw some short and small falls and wasn't impressed.

A few days ago when I saw the upper trail sign I decided to finish the upper part. It took about 1.5 hr on whiteoak canyon trail to reach the mid point (2.5 mile post). The upper waterfall is located 0.1 mile above the post and beautiful.

I took Skyland- big meadows horse trail on the way back and it's a big mistake. The trail is gradually covered by tall plants with thorns, and getting narrower.

Overall I completed whiteoak waterfall trail and...

Such a beautiful route through Whiteoak! The total distance is about 7miles walking to the main waterfall, however, we only did about 2miles (45mins) to the first set of small falls. There are a few on the route to the main falls. It was great going hike, terrain can be very rocky and unstable in a few spots, but not too bad with walking stick assistance. It was more difficult coming back because it was up hill, so got winded a few times!!! Very peaceful and serene! Will definitely go back to try for the...

Who’s ready for for some waterfall action!? Now that it’s June, my hikes in Virginia will be involving a LOT more water! 😅 Here are ten of my FAVORITE waterfall hikes in the state: [📌Save to plan your summer hiking!] 1. South River Falls (Shenandoah NP) 2. Cedar Run Falls- my favorite for swimming (Shenandoah NP) 3. White Oak Canyon- there are at least 6 waterfalls on this trail! (Shenandoah NP) 4. Dark Hollow Falls- option to add Rose River (Shenandoah NP) 5. Overall Run Falls- also several waterfalls, including the tallest in the park! (Shenandoah NP) 6. Doyle’s River Falls- option to add Jones Run Falls (Shenandoah NP) 7. Apple Orchard Falls- off the Blue Ridge Parkway (Buchanan, VA) 8. Crabtree Falls- the tallest in the state (Tyro, VA) 9. Great Falls (Mclean, VA) 10. Devils Bathtub (Duffield, VA) Still on my list: 💦Falling Spring Falls (Covington, VA) 💦Cascade Falls (Pembroke, VA) 💦Saint Mary’s Falls (Raphine, VA) 💦Hone Quarry (Dayton, VA) 💦Roaring Run Furnace (Eagle Rock, VA) 👉🏼Which one are you hiking to first!? ⛔️Help preserve the beauty of Virginia by staying on established trails, disposing of all waste (even food scraps), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Visit lnt.org for more info. ⛔️ Be safe, and have fun!

IT’S WATERFALL SEASON in Shenandoah National Park! 🔥 Since it’s National Park Week, I thought I’d share some of my favorite waterfall hikes in my favorite National Park. Shenandoah has so many beautiful waterfalls, and mid-late spring is a great time to check them out! Of course, you can save them for summer too when you need a place to cool off. 😊 Check out these 12 amazing hikes in SNP: [📌SAVE to plan your next hike!] 👉🏼Which one are you trying first?? ⛔️Help preserve the beauty of Shenandoah by staying on established trails, packing out all waste (even food scraps 🐻), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Visit lnt.org for more info! ⛔️ 📍Cedar Run Falls [Hard] 📍White Oak Canyon [Hard; for something easier, just hike 1.5 miles to lower White Oak Falls from the parking area on Weakly Hollow Road] 📍Naked Creek Falls [Hard] 📍Lewis Spring Falls [Moderate] 📍Dark Hollow Falls [Moderate] 📍Rose River Falls [Moderate] 📍Doyle’s River Falls [Moderate] 📍Jones Run Falls [Moderate] 📍Overall Run Falls [Moderate from Matthews Arm campground] 📍Hazel Falls [Moderate] 📍Big Rock Falls [Easy-Moderate] 📍South River Falls [Moderate] 🥾Keep in mind most of these hikes involve decent elevation gain, as you’ll have to hike down to the falls and back out again. The terrain can be rocky, steep, and treacherous when wet, so please use caution! Wear sturdy shoes and bring poles if you have them.
