I visited Slate Run Living Historical Farm and metro park with my family on Saturday, August 30th. The park itself was very nice, but I have big concerns about the working farm. The pigs were living in filthy conditions and in a small stall. The bighorn sheep were also in a very small stall and had no access to the outdoors. (The manager told me that the sheep do not leave their stall). I'm not sure if they can turn around or lie down. But worst of all, the 4 horses were each in their own stall that was no wider than the horse and tied up with a rope about 2 feet long so they could not MOVE! AND, the water buckets were all bone dry. In bringing this to the manager's attention, she stated working horses do not drink as much as your typical horse and are offered a drink after a day's work. This is ABUSE and my family will not be returning. My one regret is that I did not take pictures. I give a one star rating for the working...
Read moreNice relaxed environment. Ranger at the gate was helpful in getting me to the Living History Farm. Plenty of hands on activities for the grandkids. We went on a Wednesday and there were only a Few other folks there, it was probably the off season. The "period actors" were around, but not very interactive or informative. Most were cleaning and / or prepping for groups. Most were very nice and friendly, but with a couple I felt like we were imposing on their work, and were not engaging at all. (Even though they were in costume.
Signage is helpful in showing things to look at and do. Several fairly self explanatory wooden toys around to play with. Animals were all around . A nice day adventure with the kids. The Farm is one of several areas within the Slate Run Metro park. I recommend snacks and/or a picnic meal, as there are several really nice and shaded picnic areas within the park. There are no...
Read moreWhat a treasure! I just love the Metro Parks, but this is one of my favorites. For free you can visit the farm that is run by historians dressed in costume. The farmers are actually taking care of the animals and farming the land. There are women that are attending to the chickens the garden and the home. They sometimes have live demonstrations. It is an absolutely wonderful time for little ones. Remember to hit the restrooms before you go back into the farm area because they do not have restrooms further back on the property. Pack a picnic lunch and have a picnic at the picnic area before you enter into the farm space. The animals that they have at the farm are chickens, sheep, horses, cows, turkeys, pigs, ducks/geese, and they keep bees. When we plan a trip to stop at the farm at Slate Run with the kids we normally stay for about 2 hours...
