Ever since I was a wee lad, I've been visiting the iconic, Fort Washington. As you walk closer to the ever growing walls of the fort, you begin to grasp the what a daunting feat of engineering it is. While walking through the gaurdhouse, let your imagination transport you to the early/mid 19th century. The cannons are a blast to see! Lots of nooks and crannies to check out while adventuring as well. There is an occasional information display and events put on by the park rangers. This past summer had a couple events of 1800s style baseball games on public display. There are occasional artillery demonstrations , with full pomp and circumstance, although without a real projectile.
For your next solar eclipse meetup, the Fort is a perfect spot! We brought chairs and setup shop. Had some laughs with the Ranger. Was a great time! The walkways in and around the fort are a great way to get exercise and have a view. There are plenty of fields on the park premises that will accommodate many groups of people to just chill or for events like cookouts, birthdays, celebrations and such.
For photographers of all levels and skillsets, the Fort and it's surroundings make for wonderful images. The rolling hillside drapes away from the base of the fort and flows into the rocky embankment of the Potomac River. Coupled with the lighthouse, this allows for a picturesque view of the Fort, and at a 180 degree turn, and of Mount Vernon, president George Washington's home. Stop by and check things out, it will be a...

There is a great view of the river from...
