I've visited Detweiler Park numerous times, and it's such a peaceful and serene place. There are a wide variety of trails to suit all abilities and/or time frames (most trails have multiple connecting points to other trails), and the provided maps are detailed enough to be a help in navigating. There are porta-potties setup in a central area of the park - better bathrooms would certainly be nice, but it's adequate. I nearly always see some wildlife while I'm here - usually deer, but have seen turkeys, too.
Most trails are suitable for trail-running - wide and well maintained with few roots or rocks to worry about (With exception to trails that head into the mountains)., and, of course, regular hiking.
Detweiler has such an abundance of different environment, with grassy fields, pine plantations, and mountain rock gardens. The best part? You can easily check each of those areas out in less than an...
Read moreA lovely, peaceful, expansive area to enjoy being in nature. Located at the base of Peter's Mountain, this is just a place to walk, hike, explore--nothing more. No playgrounds, picnic tables, pavilions, or restrooms. But it's truly a gem. Well maintained trails. Most are packed dirt or mown grass. All are wide and easily traversed, though some offer some good hills. The trails take you through various terrain--meadows, evergreen forests, woods. The trail loops are long enough that you can easily get in a couple of miles, if you're looking for a longer hike or trail run.
**Note that this park shares a parking area with the Dauphin County Conservation Society, and there are only two very small signs that say Detweiler Park. No signs for Detweiler are at the driveway, only a sign for the county conservancy. The beginning of the trails starts off the parking lot that is just behind the...
Read moreDetweiler is a beautiful nature preserve with the right balance of untouched wilderness and trails/amenities. It is perfect for leaving the busy world behind and a great place to walk your dog with lots of forests, a beautiful stream, an open meadow that gets a golden glow as the sun sets, and all weather sturdy/cheerful Adirondack seating positioned strategically for a rest. Lots of parking and a couple picnic tables by the Penn State extension office. I don't find it typically crowded and I feel safer with 1 or more companions. I think there is only one trail leading in. It has a portable bathroom or two past the stream and up the hill plus a trash can. Most of it is flat after the hill but the hill has some ruts and it would be difficult with a wheelchair. Great place for...
