What a great start to Blues Trail in MS along Hey 61. I was greeted immediately by Margaret. She was so very helpful and friendly. Thatās the thing about MS; hospitality!!! We are the greatest state for this hence we are the āHospitality Stateā. But most only think of MS before civil rights movement which is sad. Iāve been to 42 states and experienced more racism when traveling than I ever have in MS. Now back to museum! š This museum is EXCEPTIONAL!!! It was way more than I expected and so well organized and really top of the line. It was also larger than I imagined. The artwork is simply beautiful. Plus, there is all you need to start your Blues Trail Journey through the Delta. Margaret will definitely guide you through the map etc.
They also have a small music studio with video guidance to make a blues song and sing it! Of course I didnāt make one but I did sing along with the gentleman giving instructions. š What a unique idea!!!
I love the COLORS and how the artist are represented throughout the galleries. The gift shop is very large and has a wide variety of souvenirs plus smaller artwork of paintings in museum. The museum and gift shop are fairly new.
Margaret suggested we drive on old Hwy 61 to site see. I did start but too many stops and speed bumps through some areas. Necessary of course but makes the journey longer and only really see homes. Well, I stayed on it for 20 minutes so not sure if much else to see along the way.
Mississippi produced some the greatest artist in world (B.B. King, Jimmie Rodgers, Marty Stuart, Elvis, Morgan Freeman, Ike Turner, Tyrone Davis et al) Thatās something to be very proud of!!! I love my home state and all the history it has to offer! I highly recommend this museum and just taking the time out...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is such a great museum, and we were so glad to have discovered it! Itās a very nice exhibit. Talks about the blues greats who were all from the region. Artifacts and history notes. We thought weād quickly cover it in 30 mins but after 1 hr the staff had to usher us out (they were super nice and allowed us a little time to wrap up). At $10, itās very reasonably priced. They had a nice gift shop and clean restrooms as well. TBH we initially came here since we were headed to Memphis and wanted to āstopā in Mississippi state. We liked the concept of this museum so much that it replaced the blues hall of fame...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe Gateway to the Blues Museum packs a lot of blues memorabilia in a small space! Visiting the museum in the middle of the week had me being one of only a few people at the museum which is preferred in my case so that I donāt feel rushed and can take everything in. The museum had some cool videos that taught a good deal of history of the musical genre. The collection of musical instruments in the space is very impressive! The staff were very friendly and helpful during my visit making for a great experience. I recommend visiting here if you are...
