The Smokejumper Visitor Center in Missoula is an extraordinary place to visit. Our tour was led by a wonderful guide who made the experience both informative and engaging. The tour itself is highly recommended for anyone interested in learning about smokejumpers and their crucial role in firefighting. We were incredibly lucky to visit just as the smokejumpers had returned from a fire on July 4th. We got to watch an actual jump on video, narrated by the smokejumper himself, along with his partner. They provided fascinating insights into their experiences, which our guide mentioned is a rare treat. This unique opportunity added a special touch to the already impressive tour. The Smokejumper Visitor Center is a cool stop for anyone visiting Missoula, offering a captivating look into the bravery and skill of these elite firefighters. Highly recommended!

We came to the Pacific North West from Europe and visited Missoula specifically for the Smoke Jumpers exhibit, only to find it closed upon arrival (despite its advertised opening hours today). We even called several days in advance, couldn't reach anybody, nor was there any recorded message. In the year 2025, it takes less effort to update the website than to type up and print a page that the center is closed. We also noticed in the parking lot a half dozen other visitors to the center turning around and leaving disappointed. I'm making it a 3-star review, because it could be a very interesting place to visit and learn.

My first impression was really poor. It was not clear right away where to enter. There were lots of weeds in front of the building which looked terrible. The are no guided tours right now, even though their website says otherwise. It is a very small building. As a former wildland firefighter, I didn't really need the tour, but it would have been nice. There is a short informative video and a replica of the inside of a lookout. The only other thing to see is the gear smokejumpers use. At least it was free to enter.

Once you turn off of the road/West Broadway Street there isn't signage to indicate where you should park or where the museum is located. My friends and I walked around and did locate the museum, in spite of no signs, only to find that it was closed. Please note: We looked at the website and the information there said that it was open daily for tours. If you plan to visit this museum I highly recommend that you call beforehand. To the staff at the museum- please update your website, and please post signage to indicate where to park and the museum location.

Update: I finally was able to visit in early May 2024. I did call beforehand and had an appointment; this worked out well. The tour was very interesting, informative, and exceeded expectations. I'm so glad that I gave this center another try as it was well...

Was really looking forward to this tour, small or otherwise. Unfortunately, we arrived 30 min before the posted tour time on a Sat and it was locked up tighter than a drum. The hours posted on the door and on the phone message did not state that they were closed on weekends. And the Google search results stated that they were open on Sat and Sun (I have since reported that change). A fireman in another building told us is that the visitors center is in fact closed on weekends. It's really too bad because there were are 5 other cars that arrived and left when it became clear that the center was not going to open. So if you plan to visit, take your chances and hope that it is open since the online search results indicate that they are closed Mon...
