A true piece of history, this is a worthwhile endeavor to get to and see. We were here obviously before Covid; I hope it can return to its old self: we took a flight from upside to the little airport here; that alone afforded wonderful views of the cliffs ..a rickety old bus picked us up there for the tour of the settlement; again, a really neat part of the tour: the driver had known many past residents who'd suffered from Hansens...it was the best 4 hours...we toured the church; had time to picnic(bring own food); read up about this site prior to coming so that you truly understand what you will...

This place is truly a life changing experience. We walked down because there's story of the mules crashing into each other and one was dead 2 passengers in life support. We don't want to place our lives in danger and cause cruel and unusual punishment to the mules. Walking down is safer and you can test your strength and stamina. Some young guys ran down in 30 minutes. We took 1 hour to walk down and 1 back up. Others took 2 hours but in the end it's the journey you took with your feet that counts. If you are mobidly obese take the...

Expensive hike with a very poor guide signs up for Damien tours LLC. Not father Damien tours. We chose the later and had a 90 year old man talk about 3 houses and then drive us to the "highlight of the tour"(his words)... lunch. However due to some glitch in their system we were not included in the lunch. If this were not a gorgeous hike and beautiful area this would get a 1 star.

However the Damien tours looked like they were having fun and they actually learned...

This is Sacred Ground! If you stop and quiet yourself, you can feel the earth cry out the anguish of the 103 years of exiled people banished from family and friends. Then there are the rays of light shining through the darkness of people who came to help. Among whom are St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. The two Hawaiian saints who spent their life to bring hope in the midst of what seemed hopeless. There is history here that needs never be forgotten.

Serene, peaceful, and beautiful. If you ever get the opportunity to go here, go at least once. The history of all who lived here as their residence and those who came selflessly to serve them is incredible. Pray for the handful of patients remaining and for all those who keep this place Kalaupapa.

The Kalaupapa leper colony was a great opportunity to see self-sacrifice in action by both Saint's Damien and Marianne Cope. Although, you must be sponsored to visit Kalaupapa, it is well worth it. Father Patrick is a excellent guide. Also Sister Barbara Gene is a fantastic guide too.
