Of all the places one must visit on Molokai, this is one of them. This area is maintained by the County of Maui so it is with plenty of parking and easy access for anyone. There are even restrooms if you need them.
The day we visited was covered with clouds but there were still peekaboo use of the Kalaupapa Peninsula. If the wind is up you can get a little cold so it's worth having a windbreaker or jacket with you. Don't forget to take lots of pictures as you're looking at the history of Hawaii right in front of you.
I went finally see if you can find the stink fungus. Colorful but wow! I don't know it's true name but the story I was told is pretty amazing.

A short drive from the airport and well worth it. The lookout gives you a great visual perspective of how high the cliffs are (2000ft at thia point!) and how cut off Kalaupapa is from the world.
The lookout also has some nice informational signs that tell you about what happened at Kalaupapa, the history, geography and more. It is well worth your time to come see thia and the nearby Kowleonanahoa (phallic) stone. Kowleonanahoa and the lookout are in the same parking lot. The stone ia about a 5-10 minute walk through an almost Pacific Northwest forest and the lookout is a 2-3 minute walk from the parking lot. I highly recommend seeing them both!

Do you like miles of pristine white sand and absolutely clear, turquoise water? If not, you'll hate it here. For me, this place is perfect. We went on a Thursday and were 3 of the 5 people on the beach at all. We went back in Saturday with the weekend "crowd"- I counted 20 people spread out along the more than 2 miles of beach.
Reviews say the beach is unswimmable- we swam. There is an undertow, but it was nothing compared to any California beach I've been to. The water is crystal clear and breathtaking. There were locals swimming far out, children wading and a few snorkelers.
The kids loved the crashing waves, and I liked that they were never more than knee high. It made it easy to supervise (no life guards on duty). We loved this beach. There are bathrooms with showers and a tree trunk shower, which we thought was very fun.

Located on an easy drive to the west side of Molokai. It was easily accessible and parking was ample and flat. We were the only people at the beach at noon on a weekday in March. This is not a swimable beach. Watch children closely. The waves are mezmerizing and clearly unpredictable. From the parking lot, it is an easy, short, level walk thru a beautiful shaded park with bathrooms, outdoor shower, picnic tables and charcoal grills. The sand is soft and squishy then slopes down toward the shoreline where the sand is firm and walkable. A few shells lay in the tide wash areas. Be careful of waves that wash away your footing. The colors of blue in the water are beautiful.

Visited Papohaku beach park in May 2024 with my partner whilst we stayed in Molokai. The beach goes for miles and we just about had it to ourselves miles of golden sands. The waves were quite big so not the most suitable for swimming did see a couple of surfers though. Plenty of space so parking not an issue, i think there was restrooms and pic-nic tables. There is great views out to the ocean if it's clear you can see the island of Oahu. So if you want piece and quiet and miles of golden sand and some nice beach walks then this is for you. I would love to go back and would in a heart beat. Steve and Jacqui fae Fife.

We stopped by Papohaku Beach Park on a Thursday afternoon in May. There wasn't another soul in sight. The park itself is cool because of the trees that grow up all over. It's kind of spooky but kind of cool all at the same time. The walk to the beach from the parking lot wasn't far. The beach is absolutely gorgeous! I'm not sure but there were miles of sand and not one other person in sight. The water looks a little murky but it was still beautiful! definitely a place worth visiting.

Halawa Park 🏝
The magnificent views enticed us as we drove down into the valley. It is one lane and very windy to the end of the road… literally. You find yourself in a lush garden jungle covered valley, where you can stand in the mix of ocean and river water as you look up the valley to the spectacular waterfalls. There are 2 small coves within one larger protected cove. We spent the entire day alone, exploring and enjoying these beaches. It was a day I’ll likely never forget.
Molokai beaches are idyllic, almost cliche. Soft white sand, clear aqua blues of the warm water, palm trees, wildlife… you know, Hawaii 🏝 Yet, not. There are so few people on this island that you find yourself alone or nearly alone at every beach. The east (wet) side of the island has mangroves and jungles, whereas the west end is desert with thorn tree forests. (Seriously, watch out for those thorns, Yo!) The west side also has amazing tide pools at most beaches.
All around, I found many beaches to have a wicked undertow with super soft and fluffy sand that you sink 6”-10” + into. Of course I know it’s all crabs in there as I’d just watched them scurry from hole to hole and dig more holes! 😳🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀 😳🤣

The scariest narrow 1 1/2 lane mountain road on the east side of Molokai. The vegetation changed dramatically from higher to lower elevation and felt a bit like Jurasic Park. About half way to the end of the road there is Puu O Hoku Ranch, a small gift shop with minimal snacks or provisions. The road to turns very steep and several switch backs to reach the end. There are a couple places to pause and look over the edge but they are mostly over grown and you can't see much. At the end of hwy 450 you will have a rustic parking lot with a nice picnic table looking into Halawa bay. The river runs into the ocean here and you can take a few steps thru the river onto the sand island in the bay. If you want to go to the waterfall you need to be on a guided tour as much of the land is privately owned.

Visited Halawa park whilst we stayed in Molokai in May 2024 with my partner and loved it. It's is a bit of a drive from the main town Kaunakakai and the last few miles is narrow and winedy. But it is a very rewarding journey with loads beautiful stops on the way. Stop at the lookout to look at the waterfall up the valley it's stunning. The beach is beautiful with views up the valley, the beach at the other side of the river is secred and for locals only so show respect and do not cross. The beach on the right hand side of the river through the bush path is ok to access. I would highly recommend visiting the Halawa Park if your staying in Molokai it's a beautiful setting and I would do it again and again. Steve and Jacqui fae Fife.

A beautiful beautiful area each time we've gone. For us, never been anyone down there just beautiful greenery in the background with a large waterfall at the end. The beach has very small breaks and the waves sound so soothing and gentle. Nice little walk around the entire crescent and with the lack of pretty much any noise and people, it was a real reflection moment when I strolled it by myself. Plenty of space to park at the end. One of my favorite places on the island.
