Was publicly humiliated by one of the volunteers at their last book sale. They now have signs saying ‘limit of two bags for book dealers- including couples’’. So only one bag each for my husband and I. I assume that was mostly intended for Amazon scanners, in which case just ban them entirely as many sales are doing. (And I wish all sales would. ) Because I ONCE talked to this volunteer about how I hoped/planned to open a bookstore in my town, she decided it was appropriate to yell at me from across the room about how I could only take two bags. And the. Yell again that it was two only for me and my husband to share. She then made comments about me to other patrons, one of whom then decided to make snide comments about how the sale should be for Montville residents only. I’ve been going to book sales for about 30 years as my mom used to take me. At this Montville sale I ALWAYS offer an extra donation to the Friends as a thank you for holding the sale. My mom and I have both always bought bags and bags as we buy for multiple other people- friends and family members. I do sell my books on Marketplace after I read them, and my husband sells the kind of obscure engineering, math, and science books that literally no one is looking for at a local sale. They are generally so niche that they can take months or years to sell. Truly showed the elitist true colors of the people at the library. Their sale has gone downhill every time they hold it as it seems they are getting far fewer donations, which may be why they made this rule. But if there is a bag limit it needs to apply to everyone, they truly have no idea who is a seller or not. And if you hate out-of-towers ( I live a whopping mile away in the next town over) at your sale, ban us entirely. Learn manners and don’t...
Read morePublic libraries are, of course, a necessity. This, my town’s local library, has been a little bit slower than many to expand its services (we’ve had the same reactionary Republican regime in power for decades in Montville Township), but the new head of the library has been trying and succeeding to make the library a community hub. There isn’t a Maker’s Space yet, but there are now things that can be borrowed (e.g. jigsaw puzzles); there’s a nice array of craft, educational, movie, technology, and other programs offered (alas, not web-cast, but it’s not as if you can’t get Zoom presentations from more-advanced libraries in the area.) There are displays of books and/or celebrations for various occasions, including LGBT+ Pride, Black History, and Earth Day, handled in a balanced manner (despite the existence of book-banning, radical-right candidates for school...
Read moreA true gem in the area. I loved to study here during my college years, and I appreciate it even more now that I have children. The staff is consistently friendly and welcoming, creating a warm environment for all visitors. A special shoutout to Ms. Jolie, who makes story time engaging and enjoyable for the little ones. There is a wide variety of toddler activities, as well as opportunities for adult learning and social events, making this an ideal place for individuals...
