The ‘Mr Charlie’ rig has a very interesting collection of historic oilfield photos, tools, equipment and memorabilia as well as the rig itself. I was shown round by Virgil, who is extremely knowledgeable as well as passionate about the Oil & Gas industry and the important part which Morgan City has played in its development over the last 50 years. I also saw the new collection in their Diving Museum which is attached to the same facility, just where the bridge to the rig meets the land. Thus was a small, but interesting collection which included items from the very early, hand pumped air diving right up to modern day Remote Operating Vehicles which can work in extremely deep water. Read moreBryce Merrill was our guide for this visit, and we couldn't have asked for a more pleasant and knowledgeable guide, indeed. This oil rig was the first floating rig ever built, and it dug its last well in 1986.
Ever since, it has been used for training purposes, and for educating the public about off-shore drilling.
Bryce has worked on ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), been a diver, and supervised team members, as well. He explained the process of drilling in detail and told us a bit about Morgan City anP.od the Atchafalaya River's role in the Intercoastal Waterway.
Senior price was $7 pp. Donations are accepted to be able to continue the good work of the Rig Museum and ROV and Diving...
Read moreTour guide, although friendly, spoke quickly and not clearly. He was really difficult to understand. Impossible for our kids who lost interest immediately. The museum has got some potentially interesting artefacts but it was not brought to life at all. The rig itself was better but I feel it could have been a whole lot more engaging with the right tour leader. We weren't aware they had changed their prices. The site said adults $7 so we assumed kids were free. He gave us the prices at the end though - $8 adults and $6 for kids over 6 (any younger they don't really follow it). He said they can't update their site to reflect the changes. I would argue that kids under 12...
