Spent a weekday afternoon here and wasn't disappointed. It wasn't too busy and we were able to park relatively close. We found a good spot on the beach but there really isn't any shade to be found. I'd suggest bringing an umbrella or something if you want some time out of the sun.
The water was really warm and there's a rope in the water marking the edge where it gets deeper. There wasn't a lifeguard but for the most part people were responsible. The water was shallow enough that I could walk right up to the rope with the water up to my shoulders, I'm 5'11". (Not sure how much this might vary when it's rainy.) There's sand but a pretty good mix of pebbles too. It was a bit painful when I was kneeling in the shallow area with my 5 year old niece. She was fine too in most of the area, it's a pretty gradual slope as far as depth.
There were people jumping off the cliffs and rocks in various places. It didn't seem to be designated or anything, pretty random. You're able to bring your own inflatables which is great, you can float around and take a nap without washing out to sea or anything. Worst case you end up way over in the deep end and have to paddle or swim back. Several people did just that though and seemed to be fine out there.
I only saw some very small fish that ventured into the shallow area but I didn't go out past the rope. They were sandy colored and maybe 5 inches long. My niece had fun trying to chase them, however they're way too fast, luckily...
Read moreI've spent quite a bit of time here this summer with my grandkids. They love swimming here!
The pluses are the nice gradual entry into the water, the swim area is marked off and they recently added buoys in addition to the ropes so it's easier to see, it's easy to spend a day here. Pack drinks, food, snacks and have a picnic. It's also free to get in, and generally not too crowded. The water is also warmer earlier in the season due to the shallower depths in the swim area. There's a picnic area as well, it's shaded, and you can grill.
The negative: there is a building with bathrooms and showers, which in years past was open to public. This year the building and bathrooms are closed, and they provide Porta potties. Depending on when you go (when they are emptied) they can be decent, or they can be completely disgusting. It needs to be emptied/cleaned more often. There is NO lifeguard. While this is posted, it could be concerning if people aren't watching closely (most people keep a very close eye on the kids though, so no complaints) It does get very deep on the other side...
