We had a fantastic trip with this outfit. While it seems pricey, consider you're getting both a boat tour along Pictured Rocks, and the opportunity to kayak and get really close to the amazing rock formations for about 4.5 miles (2 hours) along the most scenic part of the park. The boat stays near enough during the entirety of your kayak tour that you're able to go aboard to use the restroom or if you've simply had enough paddling. Only tandem sea kayaks available, but everyone paddles with a partner; if your group has an odd #, you'll be grouped such that you're not alone. The kayaks, life vests, and paddles all seemed well-maintained. The boat we road on was only a few years old and seemed in great condition. Safety seems to be a high priority here. To that end, we'd actually booked a tour earlier in the week, but was canceled due to weather. We managed to snag some of the last spots on a tour the day before we left town, when the weather seemed like it would clear up by the time we were scheduled to depart. Prior to boarding the boat, we got a spiel from the manager that the previous group coming in had reported that the lake had gotten a little choppier than when they first put in. We were told in no uncertain terms that they couldn't guarantee that we'd be able to paddle the planned route; the backup plan was a slightly shorter but more sheltered stretch along Grand Island (and discount to the rate for the inconvenience). Fortunately, the wind had died down enough by the time we made it out to the drop point about 45 minutes later that we were able to do the entire stretch with no interruption. On the boat ride portion, you pass by and can see the East Channel Lighthouse on Grand Island and Sand Point Beach. You also go by Miners Castle, though it's not so easy to make out from afar. A couple miles past Miners Beach, our group of 6 kayaks put in at Mosquito Beach and the up-close tour (led by one of the company's employees) began. The day prior to our kayak trip we hiked the Mosquito & Chapel trails in Pictured Rocks and, while there were places you could see the cliff formations, this was entirely more amazing. It seemed like around every bend there were slightly different rock formations; our guide gave us a pretty amazing geology/history lesson with this, explaining how some layers we saw and could touch were literally 10x older than the dinosaurs. Other places you could paddle under a massive overhang or into a little cave (if you're daring enough). We paddled past Lover's Leap, Grand Portal Point, and over to Chapel Rock where the boat picked up everyone. Not sure if it's standard, but our guide also made sure to take a handful of pictures of the group and texted us a link to the album before we even got back to the dock in Munising; it was nice having pictures of our family that, say, didn't have my daughter awkwardly twisting about 75 degrees around to try and look at me as I took a picture. Recommend a dry bag/case if you're planning to bring wallet or keys out with you. And a waterproof case with a lanyard or flotation device for your phone, because you'll definitely want pictures. Well worth every penny, very highly recommended. Pretty much the best part of our 2 week vacation through the UP.

A new experience unlike any other. Upon arriving at Pictured Rocks Kayaking, we entered the building and promptly signed in based on our previously made reservation. We were then instructed to wait among the small crowd outside for our safety instruction before heading out to the water. When it was time for the brief safety guide on procedures, we were greeted by our enthusiastic and lovable captain, Captain Harry. Moonlighting as a stand-up comedian, he filled our initial journey across Lake Superior with wit, laughter, and honest smiles. As we approached our destination, we were divided into groups and introduced to our kayaking guide, Colette. A wonderful spirit, her bright smile and cheerful energy permeated the air as soon as we gathered in our initial kayak cluster. While being delightfully informative, Colette aided us in navigating along the Pictured Rocks of Lake Superior, teaching us about the different cultural and historical aspects of the beautiful natural formations that hung overhead and surrounded us, as well as some of the geologic features. The sights and photogenic opportunities were like those I’ve only ever seen in film and literature, both of which fall dramatically short of the awe that sets in as you find yourself dwarfed by the landscape around you. The dark and light blues of the water below and sky above allowed the rich greens of foliage and the earthy mosaic of the cliffs to pop as if social media filters were placed directly into your retinas. After a physically stimulating but easily achievable five miles of breathtaking scenery, we were once again greeted by our beloved Captain. Once aboard, we were able to change in the bathrooms located on board and dig into the snacks we had packed and left on the ship. The brief trip back to shore was filled with suggestions on local eateries and other natural spectacles to see. With a small sense of community, camaraderie, and Captain Harry's playlist playing, we pulled into the docks singing in unison to 'My Girl' by The Temptations. My experience with Harry, Colette, and the rest of the crew at Pictured Rocks Kayaking allows me to give my highest recommendations for a truly new experience unlike any other.

Don't hesitate and just GO! This was the BEST experience I have had in a long time!! The owner and crew were AMAZING and an absolute blast!!! They take the safety to the next level with quick training making everyone feel very safe, the boat ride out is about an hour but the whole crew chats with you and it felt like about 5 minutes. You can stay inside the boat or take in some beautiful views on the deck. Once you are close to getting in your kayak, they divide into groups and get you going quickly. They slide the kayaks off the top of the boat (which was fun to watch), and your kayak simply sets in a "frame" which stabilizes it for you. You simply step in and sit down. NO worries of it tipping or anything that I'm sure runs through everyone's mind. You just push off and you're paddling before you know it. These are sea kayaks too so even through a few waves, these keep you safe while having fun!! There was even a young girl and her mom in our group and she was paddling and having a blast with the rest of us! Your guides are incredible at knowing everything about the area and are funny as hell. Ask them questions and chat them up. Incredible staff!!! Just can't say enough! And remember.. while you paddle - look up and look around. There is so much to see!!! And once back on board after your AMAZING paddling session, they will give you tips on what to do around town. A great tip is to take water and snacks with you (which they recommend as well) for the trip back. We took a bottle of water in the kayaks and then several for the trip back. You will be hungry and thirsty. And yes, there are (very clean) restrooms on the boat. Then, once you are back, stop by the store. I LOVE my hoodie. Soooo comfortable! I think we left with about 5 pieces. Kudos to this business; safety and fun rolled into one!

Pictured Rock Kayaking provided an experience that everyone should add to their bucket list. Too expensive? Absolutely not! You can not put a dollar amount on these priceless memories. The adventure was well organized: From booking the trip to parking, getting ready, the actual kayak trip as well as the dropping off and picking up kajakers with the boat went smoothly. Safety and comfort were always their number one concerns. Staff were young, energetic, entertaining, very knowledgeable, and attentive. The trip started with safety tips and a demonstration of how to effectively maneuver a tandem kayak. A quick run to the bathroom, which was very clean, and off we went on our journey. A 40-minute boat ride brought us to the area with the most picturesque areas of the Pictured Rock National Lake Shore. Staff assisted us into the kayaks and sent us off in groups of 12 with an experienced leader. I am in my 60s with arthritic stiff knees, and I was worried about safely (and somewhat gracefully) getting into a kayak. No problem, staff were very helpful and caring and clearly have dealt with this before. Paddling 5 miles along the rocks and caves lasted about 2 hours. It was easily doable even for beginners. In the office, they sell waterproof cellphone pouches. These worked and came in handy. We had 8mph winds. The waves were not bad, but if you wanted the full experience and went into the caves/close to the rocks, you sometimes got sprayed with water or hit by water dripping from the rocks. Having an extra sweatshirt along we could change into after the trip was also helpful. We left it with our backpack on the boat. Applying mosquito spray is another good idea. Bugs are plentiful and hungry the closer you get to the rocks. Pictured Rock Kayaking, you are a top-notch outfit! Thank you for this wonderful experience.

For the price and the experience, this kayaking was not worth it to us. I will say that my review is mostly due to our guide. Our “guided five mile tour” was led by a gentleman who rarely spoke but when he did talk, the information was incorrect. He told us how Lake Superior was the largest lake by volume (it’s not) and how it was third largest in surface area (it’s first) just behind Lake Baikal in Russia and Lake Victoria “which I think is in South America” (it’s in Africa). He also told us how Lover’s Leap got its name from a legend of two lovers jumping off after they were forbidden from getting married (wrong again) and followed it up with “there’s a second part to the legend that I forgot, you can Google it when you get back”. As a tour guide, shouldn’t you know this information? I counted five, maybe six, points during this trip that our guide stopped and spoke with us. On a trip that boasts 13 of the most desired locations, one would think there would be more of a narration. One positive: we liked the convenience of the boat and found it easy to load into the kayaks and push off. It was comforting to know if we had to use the bathroom or got nauseous, the boat was close by to pick us up. On the boat ride back it was interesting to see how the other guides interacted with their groups. One handed out quarters bearing Pictured Rocks on the reverse to commemorate the trip. Another sent individual photos to their kayakers. Meanwhile, our tour guide was nowhere to be found. Additionally, our printed tickets advertise “a 5 hour adventure” but we were back on shore just over four hours later. Ultimately, this kayaking trip seemed incredibly overpriced for four adults at $705. Perhaps if we had a more interactive and knowledgeable guide this review would be different.

A great example of you get what you pay for. A little pricey, but well worth it. The views are incredible, and the staff are all passionate and knowledgable. Lake superior is notorious for being unpredictable, and with miles of sheer cliffs (no escape if you fall in), turbulent 60F water, and minimal boat traffic going with a group is a must. If you don't know people in the area, or don't have experienced kayaking friends this is the way to see pictured rocks. I think kayaking or paddle boarding is really the only good way to experience the rocks. The cruises keep their distance, and I feel like a cruise wouldn't be worth it at all. You won't fall in don't worry! (Unless you want to ;). The kayaks are highly stable, as they are so long. You also have the option to have a rudder controlled with your feet. You can literally go on this tour with NO EXPERIENCE, and be just fine. They do have a brief safety presentation, and you're in good hands. They keep the groups small so they can keep track of everyone. The guide was great, and told us all kinds of cool stuff about the geology and history of pictured rocks. Only criticism: I don't think it was mentioned anywhere that the kayaks are tandem. You will have to bring a buddy, or make a new friend. They were pretty accommodating, paired the odd ones of us out, and it wasn't a big deal at all. I would have really preferred my own kayak, especially with the price you pay for the tour, but it was all good. Just a heads up for all you solo travelers and introverts out there! Bring a good camera!
