This park has a historical fort that dates back to the Revolutionary and Civil War periods. The fort is only open on weekends, but the free/donation requested military museum is open every afternoon. The museum is crammed full of stuff, including tons of photos and artifacts from local veterans. Might even be a good place to do a bit of genealogical research. My only complaint is that the museum could be better curated, with some posters or plaques explaining the meaning of the collected items, and maybe some info about the various wars and military branches.
In addition to the historical site, there's a decent-sized playground, a food stand with tons of seating, and a small beach with lots of parking. The beach has smooth sand and shallow water going far out. Our son had fun catching hermit crabs. We didn't stay long, as the beach isn't big enough for a full-day trip. Other than some ladies casually discussing their meth-smoking habits, we weren't troubled with the sketchy people some reviewers complained of. Overall, a solid place to spend a...

Festivals, weddings, parties etc. On the giant grassy space between the fort and the ocean. The views on either side of Fairhaven and South Dartmouth are truly beautiful for sunrise, sunsets and relaxation. During the summer there is usually a yoga class on the grass with the sunshine and ocean breezes. There is plenty of gorgeous beach to walk along outside Fort Tabor on east beach to give you enough to do for a relaxing day. I love going for walks and simply enjoying the views any time of year... summer being the best time for most people. If you want to relax, beach, picnic, jog, rollerblade.. what can I say? It's a great place to go. Just make sure to bring something to eat and snack on if you'll be there for a while because there's nothing too close by besides convenience stores and homes. Stock up your picnic basket and relax... it's...
Read moreIt’s a great place to walk in the Spring and Fall. Whoever made the plans for this park had no clue. During the warmer weather be prepared to suffer sun stroke. The playground is placed in the blazing sun. Absolutely no shade. It’s always empty in the summer. All along the winding walk there’s no shade. No breeze there day, temp in lower 80’s and only one other person walking. Sad. If the City wants to make money, they should put up a bunch of shade trees and picnic tables in those two large open areas. Restrooms are well maintained. The cafe should either be open during parking hours of completely closed. I haven’t seen it open yet and I’m there everyday. Let’s get it together New Bedford. There are a lot of tourists coming here and they can’t even get a water or sit in a shady spot to...
