Maybe the best truly public space on the shores of Candlewood Lake is right in New Fairfield at Squantz Pond. The name comes from Chief Squantz, the 18th-century Schaghticoke chief whose tribe held sway over what is modern day New Fairfield and Sherman. He refused to sell this land, which was eventually acquired after his death. What is now the state park was farmland until 1926, with high slopes under a mantel of hardwood forest, stooping to a cool, blue pond with a beach. That beach is long and broad, and has a roped swimming area, bathrooms, a boat launch, picnic areas and lifeguards on duty most days during the summer break. On the shore you follow trails west into the Pootatuck State Forest.

One of my favorite go to spots in CT. Spaces are always clean, parking (AS LONG AS YOU MADE RESERVATIONS) is good, water/sand is clean, staff is friendly. Just be ready to have to walk up that hill just to use the bathroom. Sometimes the music can get a bit loud but the staff makes sure it stays at a reasonable level. Great for family outings and friend outings, they have grills but if you dont wanna clean them you can bring your own. No food for sale apart from an ice cream truck that comes in the afternoon so make sure to bring whatever you want to cook/eat.

Beautiful view, large lake! The park is very clean. There’s a lot of picnic sections; unfortunately due to the pandemic the swimming area is closed, the picnic tables were removed so make sure to bring something to seat on if you plan on doing a little bbq... Obviously the bathrooms were also closed, but the portable public toilets are available. If kayaking, water skiing or boating is your thing; this is your place to go!!!

Wow, I’ve never experienced such rude and disrespectful behavior from a park employee. I drove an hour and 30 minutes from New York City with my family, only to find out the park was closed. I’m not upset that the park closed around noon, even though it looked pretty empty. What upset me the most was the employees’ behavior. When we arrived, a girl politely informed us that the park was closed and asked if we had a reservation. I kindly asked if they could make an exception since we had driven so far. There were a few employees present, and one man, in a very deep voice, said, “Just keep on driving, move!” I was stunned into silence, as was my family. I said nothing, just gave him a thumbs up and drove away feeling helpless....

DO NOT COME TO THIS PARK!! ALL of The staff are extremely rude . This park was nowhere near at capacity nor was ANY of the Parking lots full but they turned us away. We literally walked into the park and found an entire parking lot EMPTY and when we questioned park staff why a PUBLIC state park was not allowing vehicles to enter they said “Sorry, we’re at capacity”. Funny enough, as soon a local came to ask the Staff a question after us, they were all cheerful and chipper to try and help out. Definitely felt like the staff were racially profiling all cars prior to allowing access to the PUBLIC park which is DISGUSTING and...
