I've been meaning to write this for some time. I first went to House of Natural a couple years ago when I was having some difficulties (dryness, brittleness, breaking) with my 4 year old daughter's hair. I believe it was the owner who looked at her hair and basically said there wasn't really anything she could do for her hair at the moment. I was really disappointed at this. There was nothing she could do except to recommend one product, which I purchased, which did nothing for my daughter's hair. My challenges with her hair continued until about a year later when someone recommended a Shea Moisture product (the Baobab & Tea Tree Low Porosity Protein-Free line). This was the exactly what her hair needed! It began to blossom. It grew and thickened and became so lush and beautiful. Fast forward to September 26th 2020. I wanted to get my daughter's hair braided for her 6th birthday. This was going to be her second time getting her hair braided. A family member of her dad's had once (a couple year's ago and without my permission) braided it and the tightness had caused small bumps to pop up around her hairline. I have been careful to never put her hair in any style that could cause that to happen, but I figured she was a bit older, so I would try her with a braid style. I called before going to House of Natural to see if they would accommodate us walking in. They would. We got there minutes later. My daughter was soon seen, and the braiding began. At some point I walked over to see how the braiding was progressing. I noted to the stylist that her hair seemed tight. The hair shafts seemed about to pop out of the roots. She responded, "I'm braiding her hair tight?" in a questioning, what-are-you-talking-about kind of tone. I didn't say anything to her. She soon finished. My daughter's hair was very neatly done. I was pleased about that, but still concerned about the tightness. My daughter also said she felt the tightness while her hair was being done but didn't want to say anything. (By the way, I was not pleased about the fact that even though I was prepared to pay extra for the stylist to add some beads to my daughter's hair, she said she would only be able to do that if there weren't too many clients. I couldn't really see the connection she was trying to make other than apparently some clients are more valuable than others. If I like the others are paying for a service, what's the problem?) I paid, and even tipped the stylist, and left. It took me fifteen minutes or less after I got home to add a few beads to my daughter's hair. Over the next few days, I would come to regret having gotten her hair braided. Because the braids had been so tightly done, bumps and redness developed around my daughter's hairline and throughout her scalp. I felt helpless to do anything as she scratched and scratched. I eventually took the braids out. It was then I noted the damage that had been done to her hairline (little spots where the hair has become scant). I'm not quite sure what to do about that. Shea Moisture recently canceled the Baobab Tea Tree line which was the best thing that had happened to my daughter's hair. House of Natural is 2.5 blocks from where I live, and it would have been so nice if I could just confidently walk there to get my daughter's hair taken care of. Others have left positive and glowing reviews about the salon, and I would have loved for theirs to be my experience, but it hasn't been. The setting, ambience etc of the salon is nice. Hence the 2 stars. Other things...much to be desired.
UPDATE It's been a couple months since l wrote this review. I know you are a responsive owner as I've read your responses to other posts. I read your response to my post two days after you posted it, but I'm just now ready to respond. You questioned my reason and timing for writing the review. I had no agenda other than to communicate what had happened. And my daughter did not get her hair braided in your salon 2 years ago as you stated. It was braided in September 2020, and her hair was not...

If you donât believe in miracles, I assure you, you should now! For the past year and a half, I searched tirelessly for a hairstylist who could give me the locs I dreamed of. I entrusted my crown to five different individuals, only to be left unsatisfiedâand, to be honest, heartbroken. Each hairdresser only added to the damage, leaving me on the brink of male pattern baldness. I consulted not only a dermatologist but also a trichologist, both of whom acknowledged that my hair was in very poor health. They didnât push me to any drastic decisions, but after hearing their assessments and consulting other hair professionals, I began to consider that shaving my head might be my only option. It was a personal decision that I feared I might have to make.
I scoured the internet and social media for over a year, targeting people with locs I thought were absolutely stunning, but no one had a recommendation. Everyone claimed they did their own locs! Then, one early morning at 3 AM, I stumbled upon Bronxwood Natural Haircare on Instagram. For 2 to 3 weeks, I watched the videos, mesmerized by the craftsmanship, until I decided to give it a try.
When I arrived for my consultation, I was greeted by a head of locs that were, quite simply, life goalsâlong, full, mature, and meticulously maintained. I hadnât even sat down yet when the owner (Dannette) told me exactly what needed to be done. Her sincerity struck me, but after so many failed attempts with other stylists, I was understandably hesitant. I had already spent thousands of dollars and countless hours with no results. Part of me wanted to cancel, to shave my head and be done with it.
But I prayed for guidance and decided to keep the appointmentâand thank God I did. Bronxwood Natural Haircare (Dannette) did not disappoint.
The Danetteâs focus, discipline, kindness, and 25 years of experience worked wonders. She took my damaged locs and restored them in a way I couldnât have imagined. Other stylists had told me my hair was beyond saving, but she said, âLet me try.â And try she did! They washed my hair, massaged my scalp, treated it with such tender loving care, and gave me the attention my hair has never had in 20 years of going to salons.
This stylist (Dannette) is more than just a hairdresser. She works with purpose and power. Danette repaired my crown and restored my confidence with a skill thatâs nothing short of miraculous. Iâve never seen anyone work like her, with such precision and grace.
If youâre unhappy with your locs or braidsâif your hair isnât healthyâlook no further. Iâve been to the top salons in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and no one compares. Bronxwood Natural Hair Care is the answer. They donât just style hair, they heal it. Trust me, they...

No anger or hate here, life is too good for thatđ. Your guilty conscious is what made you wait by the phone for this review. Your petty response to any poor review on your page shows your lack of professionalism. You know that the way you carried on about my inquiry was unprofessional and rude. You do not have any etiquette and could use a professional development class. I am a proud Caribbean myself, however I would not spend my hard earned money to support you specifically. As stated, I use a black owned natural hair salon in CT that is exceptional and professional. I am happy to support them.
A simple explanation about the process involved and your past ( not pass) experiences with children would have sufficed. Many blessings to you and your business.
I was referred to house of natural by two family members that receive hair services at this salon. I inquired about making an appointment for starter locs on my 6 year old son. The first thing out of the unprofessional personâs mouth was, â is he going to cry because we are not a baby sitting service to hush the childâ. I told her I donât even know how to receive that question unless she was planning on being rough with the child. I explained to her that the child has never had his hair cut, has shoulder length hair and receives box braids bi weekly so is use to getting his hair done. However, if they did not specialize in childrenâs hair she should say so and I would inquire else where. This workers disposition was nasty, condescending and a complete turn off. She ended the call by hanging up on me and stating we would not be completing the service. This is a nasty un professional establishment. Take your business elsewhere and I will let me 3 family members that utilize your service to take there business elsewhere as well. This is why it is difficult to support our black businesses especially Caribbean establishments. I live in Connecticut and the professionalism of the black owned businesses out here are exceptional. It is too bad that I havenât found one that specializes in starter locs yet, however house of natural couldnât get a dime from me. A word of advice next time start off the conversation explaining the process and asking the customer whether it would be a service the child would be able to tolerate instead of stating, â IS HE GONNA CRYâ!!
You can tell by the nasty replies to the poor reviews that this...
