Listen, if you're looking for that old-school apple-picking experience in an orchard with the kids or someone special, yes, this is it! There's no doubt this will give you that experience. However, it's not all great.
It was the most unorganized event I had ever attended, especially considering it's open year-round. I don't understand how they haven't figured out a better system. They have about 15 lines going to a counter, and I couldn't tell you what was being sold where. No proper directing, or signs. I guessed more then i should had. They do have some great stuff, like apple slushies in one building and apple donuts in another. However, I waited 45 minutes to get my daughters the slushies. Then, I had to wait another hour to get a box of donuts. Why these are separated, I am unsure. Luckily, I had blocked off the full day for this; little did I know I needed a full day to stand in line.
I also arrived around 11 am and was stuck in traffic all the way up the mountain, only to hunt for a parking spot for another 35 minutes.
After all that, I paid $60 for 2 plastic bags to go apple hunting/picking. One bag per child, which if full would be far too heavy for them to carry. But you can even bring your own bags; something smaller for kids would be nice. It's also illegal to carry apples in a wagon, I guess to prevent bruising?
And who's going to carry the heavy bags? Yep, it's dad again, along with my tired daughters. It was a long day, no doubt.
They had a lovely playground, though. However, some older teens were swinging on the swings when they clearly were too heavy. This made me leave because I was literally scared they'd break it and hit my children.
The bathrooms were very nice, except none of the toilets flushed. My daughter really had to go, but the guys' toilets had a mound of #2 going over the top, so we waited again, 30 minutes per toilet for the female bathroom, only to find it slightly better minus female products used and discarded about.
I'm going to imagine it's not always that bad because the overcleanliness was great, just excessively used that day. I would plan to stop somewhere close and try to get everyone to use the bathroom before arriving. However, you'll be stuck there long enough to need it again, I'm sure, especially if you drink the hard ciders.
They had a really cool bee train for kids. My girls loved it.
Before you get in any line, visit the gift shop first because for some reason, they have a nice gift shop with no way to purchase anything from it. Actually if you view my photos you'll see nobody was in the gift shop, i guess cause they didn't have the time to spare. I wanted to buy things, but this was after spending over 3 hours in other lines, and it just wasn't worth waiting in line again to buy a $20 bottle of simple syrup made from apples.
I think it's worth the trip once. But if you have kids, just be more prepared, and regardless of kids or not, try to be there when they open. The waiting game was the worst part, and of course, the bathrooms. Don't forget that if you get a full bag of apples, you'll be carrying them for hours if you haven't purchased the items you want first.
I probably spent $60 on $5 worth of apples. So unless you're prepared to carry heavy, awkward bags, it's not worth it for the price and weight. But it's worth it for the fun experience of picking them yourself.
I might visit again if I can make it early. Unfortunately, I live too far to be there first thing in the...
Read moreThis would be a 5-star review if the apple orchard wasn’t so severely picked over already. We walked down several different rows of apple trees and found none worth picking. This isn’t to say that we had a bad time or that there was nothing to do. On the contrary, it was a very positive experience and I look forward to returning earlier in the Apple Picking season next time. Even though the orchard offered little in the way of apple picking from the trees, they do have bins full of Fuji, Gala, Pink Lady, etc. in the covered market area. You can pay $25 for a bag, or $2/pound in the “Mix and Match” area. They also sell honey, jams, preserves, different mixes for pies, waffles, fritters, as well as pumpkins of all sizes and colors, and some very odd looking gourds.
Multiple activities for the children, including riding the “Bee Train” (for $3/person), and several free playgrounds with slides and swings, and free photo opportunities with cutouts for your head. There’s also an Apple Cannon, which is a big mounted pneumatic gun that shoots apples at stationary targets. I know there’s a cost, but I never saw prices posted for that. Looks like fun! We were there on a day when four school buses were also doing field trips there, and it was crowded and noisy. But most people were in good spirits and there were loads of smiling, happy customers.
If you want to buy food, the must have items are the Apple cider donuts (served very hot) and Apple cider. Pumpkin donuts are also available ($7 half-dozen or $12 for a dozen). And if you like alcohol, Sky Top has their own Hard Apple Cider in aluminum cans. Flavors were Apple and Cherry-Apple.
There are bathroom facilities near the playground for men and women with air dryers. And Parking is plenteous, but a bit of a walk, so get there on the early side. They are open from 9 AM - 6 PM.
Whenever I asked people I knew for Apple Picking options, Sky Top Orchard was always one of the first to be mentioned. My family had fun, and that’s really what it’s about. As it’s only a 45-minute drive from Greenville, SC, I’ll definitely visit again, and would eagerly recommend...

What I went for the U-pick experience. Just my luck, I got there on a rainy day... but I still decided to do the u-pick experience. I was prompted to purchase the bag first and then I could proceed to the orchard to pick. They have a map at the beginning but none for you to take.. only take a picture with your phone... I went Oct 8th and most apples were coming up to the end of the season. I was told that there was mainly Fujis available. I did find some fujis. I was able to taste the apples and fill my bag. Since the fruit was thin, I was allowed to top off my bag with with whats in the store bins. The picking experience would probably be better if it wasn't raining... There didn't seem to be any pickers for us to use to pick either. I didn't walk to the whole orchard since it was raining. The market area had a lot of items! I picked up a bottle of honey. Also grabbed some asian pear. The asian pears were very tasty! Though some of them looked beat up... I also had to try the cider doughnuts. I AM NOT A DONUT FAN To me there donuts tasted better cold than hot... I had one hot and didn't really like it... It is very sweet to me and tasted ok... I also bought a cup of frozen cider to drink, it was very refreshing.. and tasted like apple juice (not trying to be offensive). Over I had a good experience... minus the rain.
Environment This 50+ orchard was located on top, hence the name... It was an easy drive. There is plenty of parking available, right out front and also across the street. There is a lot to be if it isn't raining...
Niceness of the staff Super super nice staff. It was my first time doing apple picking and even trying cider! The lady was so nice to let me try them all (hot, cold and frozen).
Dollar It was $25 to do the u-pick experience but you can fill the bag to the top!
Yes Id be interested to go again during peak seasons... or even asian...
