So we went for the "ice cream train" experience and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Went with a 7 and 4 year old. The actual train does have air conditioned cars and outside shaded seating cars as well. No bathrooms on the actual train so if you are training heads up you will have to wait during the actual train ride. They do have nice facilities at the station including child changing stain and handicap accessible by the looks of it. The actual ice cream experience was actually a farmers market style trailer vendor that is at the station not on the actual train. You can get the ice cream before/before and eat on the train/or after. Some shaded out door eating areas but no inside other than the train. Cute little rail road museum and shop but it will only take 10-15 mins to walk through. Wear sunscreen and pack your water bottles full. The surrounding towns didn't have much to offer other than the 30 minutes back to Hebron or Valpo. *To make this place better a water bottle refill station would be perfect. *Ice cream actually served on the train if they could make it compatible. I hope they continue to use social media to advertise events like this because it was absolutely worth it and the kids loved riding on the train. A train ride to the Kankakee River to swim would also be fun with maybe 2/4/6 hour pick up options would also be an awesome opportunity. As long as your little are potty trained for the length of your experience I would TOTALLY recommend. As a mother though that would be an unforeseen hiccup that could be frustrating to run into after you buy your ticket and make the trip. Definitely pre-purchase...
Read moreI've lived in North Judson roughly my entire life (29 years) And I had ridden the trains when I was a kid and remembered all the fun that was. Fast forward to now I have 2 children and a wife so I figured it would be fun for them to check it out again. BEST decision the year so far for sure! The kids adored the museum as well as the display cars. But the actual open car ride itself was kinda magical? Almost healing. It was so peaceful, and with the nice breeze from the low ground you pass though it's definitely an experience worth doing. The Team that keeps everything going are also amazing, they are volunteering their time to maintain and keep these trains running which is definitely admirable. Also some of the nicest and funniest fellows you can run into also extremely knowledgeable (you will learn something every time)
So yes I absolutely recommend you book that train ride you will not regret it in the slightest, kids and adults alike will have a grand time at the Hoosier...
Read moreVery, very nice experience. The 1947 locomotive on the diesel pumpkin ride konked out and left us stranded halfway to English Lake and we all had to push the train cars back to the depot. JUST KIDDING!!! We did have an unexpected delay when the locomotive shut down due to an electrical issue but they went back and returned with a 1952 diesel locomotive to hook on and continue the ride. We all got to know one another in the downtime. It was relaxing with great music piped in the car, comfortable room temperature and a perfect autumn day outside. We could have used a cocktail bar in the dining car but that wouldn't work with the children aboard. Perhaps adult only trips in the future? Our conductor and engineer were awesome! Only criticism is to get more restroom accommodations in the gift shop. Two single restrooms with 100 people doesn't work, especially since there are no facilities...
