What's not to love about this Wagner Farm?! After visiting other farms in the north/ northwestern suburbs, Wagner's farm feels so much more organic to m e. While Zebras, Camels and Giraffes are awesome to see up close, and pony rides are fun for the kids, these added attractions can also make the farm-to-table experience feel more like a trip to Kiddie Land (If you know what that is, you're showing your age, just like I did, ha).
Visiting Wagner Farm felt like I was visiting the family farm of an old friend. I fell in love with two of the most beautiful horses I have ever seen. They weren't in stalls, they weren't chained to an oscillating horsey merry-go-round. They were unsaddled and grazing freely along the pasture side. The chicken house was authentic as was seeing the cows roam freely through the grassy knoll (if you don't see the cows along the trail, you might find them grazing along the perimeter of the farm).
Granted, Wagner Farm is in the middle of a residential area so the pastures don't stretch on for acres and acres. But it is a functioning farm that provides farm-to-table produce for those in the community. Seeing a stretch of tilled soil reminded me that taking care of the earth was all of our responsibility and that farming was as close to our purpose as one could get.
A key bonus is that the farm is open to the public and free of charge. You get the experience of farm life at a price that seems to good to be true.
Whether you're in the burbs or the City, do yourself and the children in your life a huge favor- visit Wagner Farm as soon as possible. And don't worry about missing the warm season. They'll save you a seat on the next...
Read moreWe, greater part of Glenview residents committed some 20-25 years ago now, that Wagner Farm not be plowed under, built on or paved over...but with our funding and the help of the Glenview park district, Wagner Farm would remain a working farm and provide educational classes & activities to preserve the knowledge of farming as it has existed in Illinois since the early 1800's.
There are yearly seasonal class schedules, some classes supplement Gleview school curriculums, some are offered to the community at large. There are hay rides, a couple of community elders who have extensive experience as Horse Wranglers are glad to introduce visitors to a few of the working horses on the property, and answer questions.
October is great time to bring kids for pumpkin picking...selection is outstanding. There are a variety of seasonal decorations. Gift ideas through the barns and the Wagner Farming Museum. This houses some of the craft rooms where classes are held.
Personal note: I spent part of my youth growing up on a farm in Oehlwein, Iowa. Wagner farm is a unique reflection of what is historical, but to this day shows how the American Farming experience can be sustainable. Google Wagner Farm & Glenview Park district events, and come see what is growing. It is a little bit of...
Read moreExperience the last working farm in cook county as part of the Glenview Park District at Wagner Farm. In the spring summer and fall, enjoy seeing multiple animals living on the farm. Watch cows being milked in the milk parlor at specified times or see them in the barn or field, chickens, pigs, sheep, horses, and check out the vintage tractors for a cool picture. Make sure to check out the inside of the buildings as well to take a peak into what life was like on the farm a century or more ago, as well as the history behind the Wagner Farm. Taste some yummy ice cream on the weekends too. In the summer check out the inside of the historical Wagner house to see a day in the life inside the home on a farm; bread being baked and kneaded on an old fashioned stove. Great educational and learning experience for the entire family! Highly recommend! Myself and my children love visiting the...
