Black Lake Park — Attraction in Norton Shores

A great park!! There are tons of different trails here including one wide flat dolomite one that leads to one of the two fishing decks. The parking is free and the multiple trails are easy to navigate with light foot traffic. Some paths are well groomed and some are more rustic. The park offers fields, a small pine area, water access (fishing and kayaking if you're brave) and so many little paths that it takes a while before you feel like you've walked the entire thing. Great for birding, looking for bugs and mushrooms. Some of the area neighbors use the trails for their horses. Small to medium (for Muskegon) sized preserve. There are a lot of mosquitos in the rainy months.

Black Lake Park is a 58-acre nature preserve in Norton Shores, with beautiful walking trails, wildflowers, and lots of local wildlife. Unfortunately, it’s constantly littered with tiny rubber figures tucked in trees, in little holes, and scattered on the ground. These small items can be dangerous — birds or squirrels can choke on them, and even dogs can swallow or play with them unsafely.

I’m also tired of being stormed by off-leash dogs who don’t listen to their owners. I have small children and a dog that is properly leashed — this is unsafe, and I would not hesitate to take legal action if someone’s dog harms my family.

While the park itself is beautiful, the combination of littering and illegal off-leash dogs makes it unsafe for wildlife, pets, and visitors. Please keep this space clean and safe...
