Berkeley One-Hour Hike

I have a standing weekly date with one of my grandma friends to walk the steep trails--not for sissies. My friends app says it is a 50-story hike. If we feel tired, we walk slower. There are amazing views of the Bay that can feel like rewards as you walk up up up. Friends comment on my vitality--this hike is part of my exercise program. I think it is part of the reason that I scored in the 99 percentile during my last stress test. The beginning of the climb has the advantage of amazing work of volunteers removing non-invasive plants and replacing them with local flowering varieties. This, for me, is 100 times better than a stair master at a stinky gym. And the price is right! Free.

This is probably the most fun hiking spot I've been to. The trails are beautiful and really fun to walk through with my two German Shepherds. We are so conked after hiking for an hour. The trails are not just straight paths. They are up and down and sideways. Not an easy trail to walk through if you're out of shape like me. I've gone on hikes with my dogs before and never had a trail made my calves hurt so bad the next few days after. Though, the trail was so fun and immersive that every second was well worth it. My dogs are also just as tired as I was after and they were happy with how fun the trails were. I'm definitely coming here again!

Typical East Bay regional park, complete with classic EBRPD trail layout which go directly up the steepest parts of a hill. I don't know who or if anyone plans these trails, but it sure seems like their motto is "The shortest way from Point A to Point B". We started at the Stonewall-Panoramic trailhead off of Claremont Ave, which has almost no parking, you're fighting with residents and other hikers to find a spot. We got there around 8AM and still had trouble parking. Narrow winding road, parallel parking on steep inclines, cars park 2 inches from your bumper, fun stuff! The trails we took were nice, again the start was extraordinarily steep, right off the jump you go from resting HR to max effort. The trail network is bracketed by Claremont Ave and Grizzly Peak Blvd. There are nice spots for panoramic vistas of the Bay, and some flatter trails as well. The views are the best reason to visit this park, it's just a bit of a headache to park and the steepness of the trails is annoying. Good wildflower displays in spring.

Great park with challenging hikes and fantastic views. There are trails here that ascend ~1,500 feet - all the way to the base of Tilden Regional Park. It’s a park I frequent when weather permits (which fairly often) for the hikes. I’ve seen all manner of wildlife on trails in this park: Coyotes, deer, prairie dogs (or at least that is what I think they are), rabbits, rattle snakes, lizards, etc… but haven’t had any issues.

The views here are incredible! If you’re from out of town, or you have out of town guests, definitely come here! You can see the entire bay, Oakland, Cal, SF, and Marin, see the Golden Gate, and on to the ocean! Not a bad length of hike either, it’s about a mile to the part with great views, and you can keep going beyond that if you wish.
